Can A Hitch Adapter Be Used On A 1-1/4" Hitch To Haul A Platform Rack With Four Bikes
Updated 11/13/2023 | Published 11/12/2023 >
Question:
I have a 1.25 inch receiver and am looking at buying a platform rack for 4 bikes. Can I safely use a 1.25 to 2 in adapter for either the Kuat NV or Thule T2 Pro XTR rack? Thanks,

Expert Reply:
No, hitch adapters reduce the capacity of the hitch by 50% so your 1-1/4" hitch wouldn't have enough capacity left to handle the weight of four bikes. You'll need to see if the vehicle has a 2" hitch option or confirm that you have class II 1-1/4" hitch in and use a hanging rack like the Thule Hitching Post Pro Bike Rack # TH934XTR in order to haul four bikes. If you can tell me the year/make/model of the vehicle I'd be happy to check the available hitch options.
