Question:

This has been asked before, but there seem to be several conflicting responses here. Can you clarify? I have a Thule T2 Pro XTR rack with 1-1/4inch shank. I just upgraded my vehicle and now have a 2inch receiver. Can I use the Thule Replacement Aluminum Shank Adapter - 1-1/4inch to 2 for this carrier? Id certainly like to not have to replace the entire rack.

Unfortunately, you can not Daniel but I have a solution for you that does not involve buying a new bike rack.

To use your Thule T2 Pro XTR Bike Rack item # TH23JV in a 2" hitch receiver, you'll need the Trailer Hitch Reducer item # e63YR. This reducer sleeve will insert in your Forester's 2" receiver and allow you to use your 1-1/4" T2 Pro XTR Bike Rack item # TH23JV without losing any capacity.

The accessory pin hole on the Trailer Hitch Reducer item # e63YR is 1-5/8" from the end of the receiver. The Thule T2 Pro XTR 2 item # TH23JV requires a minimum pin hole depth of 1-1/2" so this will work perfectly with the anti-rattle pin.

Another option available is the Replacement Lower Assembly and 2" Stinger for Thule T2 Pro XTR 2-Bike Rack item # TH37MY. This will allow you to move your wheel assemblies over and it'll essentially turn your bike rack into the Thule T2 Pro XTR item # TH83JV that is designed for a 2" hitch.

Please note that the Thule Replacement Aluminum Shank Adapter item # 853-7292 you were originally looking at only fits a few hanging Thule bike racks like the Thule Roadway or Ridgeline. It will not replace the 1-1/4" shank on your T2 Pro XTR Bike Rack item # TH23JV.

Thank you, Jered. That TH37MY costs more than I paid for my rack! Not a good solution. I am carrying 1 ebike (~60#) and 1 mountain bike (30#), possibly up to 2 ebikes. I am concerned that the e63YR would introduce a lot of wobble, as well as additional length and torque. I am putting it on a Subaru Forester hybrid, with a hitch limit of 150#.

@Daniel You're welcome. Yeah, installing the Replacement Lower Assembly and 2" Stinger item # TH37MY is definitely going to be a costly solution to your problem. The Trailer Hitch Reducer item # e63YR installs inside your 2" receiver so you don't have to worry about additional length as far as your Thule T2 Pro XTR item # TH23JV extending out. The locking pin Thule uses on the T2 Pro XTR is going to handle any wobbling. Once you tighten it down it'll secure both the bike rack and the hitch extender. These are going to be the only two options available.

@JerredH Sounds like it's worth a try. I don't see how the Thule tightener cam is going to secure both parts, but I'm willing to find out.

I have a Thule T2 pro XT2 bike rack. I bought both the e58yr and the e63yr adapters and was concerned about the slight dip the e63yr produced when the rack had 2 bikes on it. I found that the e58yr, even though it’s a tiny bit longer, seems to be sturdier and doesn’t produce that slight dip. I use my rack on both my 2017 Tacoma and my 2025 Forester hybrid.

Hi Daniel, Your new 2" receiver is a good thing because most adapters are designed to work with those. 1 1/4" is very limited. Also, never put a trailer hitch on a Camry (or any vehicle that low) or you will be dragging all over the place.
