Approved for use on cars, trucks, vans, SUVs, and motorhomes - not approved for fifth wheels or towable campers

Recumbent bike riders used to struggle when searching for a hitch-mounted rack that suits their needs. All it took was a little ingenuity to create the XC-Extended rack - the perfect solution for carrying recumbent bikes. This platform-style, hitch-mounted two-bike carrier transports bikes with extra-long wheelbases - like recumbents - with all the convenience of a standard platform rack.

Swagman XC-Extended XC wheel hoopsSwagman XC-Extended XTC wheel hoops

This rack comes with black XC wheel hoops, which provide a stable base for mounting your bicycles. The XC hoops adjust with a hand knob and slide along the arms of your rack to accommodate bikes with wheelbases up to 52" and tires up to 3-1/2" wide. The bonus with this bike carrier is that silver XTC wheel hoops are also included to give you that extra length required for carrying a recumbent. Simply swap out the XC wheel hoops with the XTCs and you will add 14" to the maximum wheelbase capacity, for a total of 66". The XTC hoops hold tires up to 2-1/2" wide and include rubber straps to secure your wheels to the rack.

Swagman XC-Extended measurements with XC wheel hoops installed

When the XC cradles are installed traditionally, they measure 65" outside to outside and 37" inside to inside.

Swagman XC-Extended measurements with XTC wheel hoops installed

The XTC wheel hoops - when installed traditionally - measure 81" outside to outside and 51-1/2" inside to inside.

Swagman XC-Extended with XTC hoops positioned for maximum wheel base capacity

To stretch the wheelbase capacity a few more inches, mount two XTC wheel hoops at the end of each arm on the same side of the bike carrier. Doing this increases the maximum wheel base capacity to 68".

Swagman XC-Extended bike rack ratcheting arms

Regardless of which wheel hoops you use on the rack, the upright arm offers the same great features. This arm includes a pair of ratcheting hooks that hold your bikes securely in place to prevent bike-to-bike and bike-to-vehicle contact during transport. The hooks feature soft padding to protect your bike's frame, are offset so that you can carry two bikes of the same size simultaneously, and can be locked with a 1/4" padlock. Fold down the entire upright arm by pulling a pin at the base; this enables you to reach all the gear in your vehicle's rear cargo area obstacle free.

Swagman XT-Extended bike rack baseSwagman XC-Extended with arms folded up

You can release the side arms of the rack by pulling pins at the base, then fold them up for convenient storage.

Swagman XC-Extended threaded hitch pin and clip

The bike rack includes a threaded hitch pin and a clip that work with a built-in anti-wobble device in the shank to eliminate rattle in the hitch receiver during transport. You can replace the pin and clip with Swagman's anti-rattle lock (S64029; sold separately) to lock the bike carrier to your vehicle.

Video Transcript for Swagman XC Extended Wheel Mount Bike Rack Review - 2006 Mazda 5

All right, today in this 2006 Mazda 5, we're going to do a test fit of the Swagman Bike Rack, part number S64650-EXT. A few things to know about this bicycle rack, that it will work with 1-1/4-inch receiver hitch and this will also work with a 2-inch receiver hitch with the provided spacer. We're using a class 1 on this vehicle. We're going to start off our test fit by installing the bike rack into the hitch and then well go ahead and tighten down the anti-rattle bolt and put the safety pin on the other side. Now, I'll go ahead and get some clearance measurements. Ground clearance will be 12 inches by the hitch and at the very end of the bike rack will be 15 inches.

We'll go ahead and unfold the bike rack and we'll get one more clearance measurement between the rack and the bumper, and that will be 6-1/4 inches. Okay, now we'll go ahead and check access to the back of the vehicle. Now, we'll go ahead and load up the bike. First thing we'll do is we'll make sure that the straps are out of the way for our wheels and then we'll also make sure that the clamps on the center post are extended all the way to the top. Okay, when we load up our bike, we'll put our wheels into the wheel loops and then we'll go ahead and tilt the bike a little bit out of the way so that we can bring the clamp up over the seat.

Then we'll go ahead and run the clamp onto the top tube. Then we'll make sure that the pin is inserted at the bottom of the post. Then we can go ahead and run the straps through the wheels. Okay, and that's what it takes to load up a bike. That will finish it for part number S64650-EXT from Swagman on our 2006 Mazda 5..

Carrier is a wonderful design. I purchased it to transport my LWB recumbent and my wife's mountain bike and it handles both perfectly. It is very easy to install and remove thanks to the fold-up feature. I received this hitch a couple business days after I ordered it. Really fast shippers and great people to do business with. I would recommend this rack from etrailer.com to anyone needing a hitch mount rack. 89711

I love this trailer. Only one problem is that the 2" adapter is a bit loose in the hitch. Planning to add a shim to correct that. I have a recumbent and the adjustment wheel brackets work perfect. I highly recommend it to other "bent" riders. 94172

I have two long wheel base recumbents. Would they both fit on the Swagman S64650 EXT? Wheel base is about 70 Thanks, Dale

The maximum wheel base is 66 inches, so your recumbents may be a bit long. Hollywood Racks, part HR1000R, will accommodate up to a 74 inch wheel base and it is a similar design as the Swagman.

Bought this rack to transport a SWB and A LWB recumbent. Ordered it after reading some reports on it. We were in the middle of a move from Georgia to Wisconsin and had to leave one of our vehicles in Atlanta. I found a SWB in Tennessee and needed to transport it to Wisconsin with our vehicle when I flew back to Atlanta to drive the our vehicle home. I had the carrier sent to my friends home in Atlanta. When I arrived from the airport I was able to install the primary support into the 2" receiver and bolt in place. The bolt tightened down the support so there was no play in the connection. I then took off for Wisconsin with a stop in Tennessee to test drive/purchase the bike and take it home. I had a lot riding on the performance this bike rack. If it didn't work I would forego the purchase of the bike I had found. Got to Tennessee and purchased the bike. Took the components out of the book and assembled them onto the primary support member. Adjustment of the tire holders to fit the wheel base was easy and fast, actually did it in the dark with a flash light. Really liked the removable pins with the ball detents in them. That made the entire process very simple and quick. We had the bike on the rack in less than 10 minutes. I transported the bike more than 900 miles with it on the rack. It performed perfectly at speeds above the posted limits. I have attached a photo showing it in our driveway at home. The only concern I have with the rack is the attachment of the rack to the primary support. This is not a tight compression fit and it wobbles a little. This causes the bike to behave a bit like a rocking horse when it is on the rack. This connection condition, while not critical needs to be a little tighter to make it a rock solid mount. I highly recommend this rack, it performs as promised and is a great value. 124762

This bike rack is the only one that I could find that can be used for a recumbent or a regular bike. That's why I bought it. Actually, I have only used it one time since I did not need my bikes transported but once. The bikes survivied the trip, but there was more wobbling. Maybe I need to adjust my installation. It's quite similar to the way city buses hold the bikes. 138284

Very pleased! I made an adjustment to reduce the wobbling. I adjusted the space between the tires of the bikes. I havent used the rack for my recumbant yet.

Best bang for the buck you're going to find anywhere (5*). Fits my long wheelbase recumbent with additional kit (4*). Folds out of the way, very accommodating, I can fit my [email protected] on it with 4" tires (5*). Use the 3/4 hexed bolt for a sturdier connection (4*). If you're anal about your bikes finish, put a sock or sheepskin over the eva padded hook. It will scratch if you do not (3*). 676759

I bought the Swagman Extended platform rack because I have a very long recumbent bike. The bike fits onto the rack perfectly and very securely. The rack is solid and very well-made--there is nothing cheap about it. It is a quality product. When I had an installation problem, Jamie at etrailer was incredibly helpful--she even had a Swagman representative call and help me. Incredible customer service! Thanks Jamie & Ian. 571951

Prompt delivery, on time. Assembly was easy, all parts were there. I will road test it soon. It is lower and easier to load bikes than my old one. 480366

The unit is well engineered and the quality is excellent. Easy assemble and all the parts were there. I recommend this to anyone with a recumbent bike. With the unit collapsed, it doesn't have sufficient clearance with my spare tire to be able to open the rear swinging door. 2" more would do it. Spare tire size might be the reason. 431886

The product itself seems excellent--well-crafted, solid construction with quality materials. Time will tell of course, but it looks and feels good. It fits into the back of my tow hitch, and my long wheelbase recumbent fits on it using the extended wheel wells. I had one significant assembly issue, but figured it out. I was instructed to insert two screws into part of the item that had holes, but the holes were not threaded. For a few minutes I was afraid that the product was defective. Then I noticed that a solid block of metal with two threaded holes had slipped out of position, almost invisible. With some tapping from a wooden mallet and working it with a screwdriver I got the block of metal into position and completed the assembly. 403314

Excellent service! Less than 3 days for free delivery! Fairly easy to put together. Had no problems taking 1 lwb recumbent and 1 diamond frame bike 120 miles. Excellent quality for reasonable price. 386763

It is wonderful. It was easy to put together and it works better than most bike car racks. My long recumbent bike does not move when I am driving and it only takes minutes to load and unload the bike from my car. 256994

Should have bought one earlier. It is well made and stable. No need to tie to stabilize bikes as on the hanger type. Quick and easy to load and unload. Also converts easily for receiver size. 255060

This rack worked great with my recumbent bike (Rans Rocket) and my wife's road bike. I searched for weeks to find a rack that would work with both bikes and finally lucked out and found this one. The extended loops gave it just enough room for both bikes. And, the bikes are rock solid on the rack with just one quick lock of the sliding hook. Time from set up to driving off with the bikes is less than five minutes. This includes attaching the rack to the vehicle. Great bike rack. Very easy on the back too! 247364

Etrailer has been so very helpful. I have a woman's Giant Cypress bike that hangs very low on a rack - especially on a car. I sent pictures and measurments and etrailer examined the hitch and bike then made a recommendation for a Swagman platform bike rack. (The swing away's would not work) It was fairly easy to put together. We effortlessly put the two bikes on and it felt very secure with plenty of room above the ground. On the highway I watched it from the back window and felt confident that the bikes would not come loose. We traveled about 80 miles with no problems. The only complaint I have would be it was difficult to unhitch the bike hooks; the latch seemed to stick a bit. I was very pleased with our first voyage. 201920

Good Product. There is a bit of play between the hitch and rack. I think there should be a place to LOCK the rack to the hitch so that it cannot be stolen...instead I just pack up the rack and keep in locked in my car, while riding. The lock I did get, I will return because it was WAAY to long to keep the bike steady...too much play when driving. This hitch and rack work really well on my Honda fit when considering that i am putting a 2 wheel recumbent on it. I'll know better in the fall how well it works...I live in AZ. and it is now way to hot to ride. All in all, I would recommend this to anyone wanting to carry a bike on a small car. It is really well made. 181987

I have a long recumbent bike and it fits great. I was afraid after reading some reviews about the rack rattling , mine doesn't rattle at all the bikes fit great and are sturdy. Need something to lock the rack on the hitch I got the locking product for the rack to the hitch but someone with the right wrench could take it, but I'm very pleased great product. I have a ford edge and plenty of room from the pedal of the bike to the back of the car. 135109

Good product. Very positive, non-rattling connection to the receiver hitch. Lacks a lock with the basic unit but lock can be ordered separately. Fits my 55" wheel base recumbent with no problem. Configuration allows easy loading of my slightly heavy bike. Old Swagman I've owned for 25 years is still bulletproof but not very compatible with my new recumbent. Recommended product. 133103

Wonderful! We are now carrying TWO recumbents on it. Will get a pic next time I have a chance. - Just to be clear though, there is a weight limit on the rack so make sure you watch that as some recumbent bikes can be heavy. We have Bacchetta Corsas, which are light and fall within the specs of the rack to carry both.

  • Can I Mount My Burley Recumbent Bike To Thule Apex 5 Bike Carrier
  • I do have a solution for you to carry your Burley Recumbent bike and 3 other bikes, but the Thule Apex XT 5 Bike Carrier # TH9026XT, and Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Rack # Y02459, are not intended to be used with Recumbent bikes. Since you will be carrying so many bikes, there are a few options you have. One would be to carry your recumbent bike and one of the other bikes on a hitch bike rack and then carry the other 2 on a roof rack bike rack. For a hitch bike rack to accommodate your recumbent...

  • Bike Rack for a 3-Wheel Sun Recumbent Trike
  • We do have a hitch mounted bike rack that will hold a 3-wheeled recumbent bike. Take a look at the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider, # HR1000R-TRKADP. It will hold 1 Delta style or 1 Tadpole style recumbent trike. This bike rack is also compatible with Class II, 1-1/4 inch hitches or any Class III trailer hitch with a 2 inch receiver. I have linked a video review of this rack for you.

  • Recommend a Hitch Mounted Bike Rack To Carry 2 Sun Recumbent Bikes
  • For recumbent bikes, we have the Swagman XC-Extended Platform-Style 2 Bike Carrier for 1-1/4 and 2 Inch Hitches, part # S64650-EXT. The Swagman XC has extended wheel platforms to accommodate bikes with a longer wheelbase such as recumbent bikes. Part # S64650-EXT is designed to fit 1-1/4 inch and 2 inch hitches and can also be folded up while attached to the vehicle when it is not in use. Part # S64650-EXT can accommodate bikes with a wheel base of up to 66 inches when using the silver...

  • Will 2 Tour Easy Recumbent Bikes Fit on the Swagman XC-Extended Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack
  • If your 2 Tour Easy recumbent bikes have wheel bases of 68 inches or less then you can put them both on the Swagman XC-Extended rack, # S64650-EXT. The bikes would be alternating directions so the wider seats should not be an issue, especially if the seats are not as wide as the pedals would be. I have included a link to a video review for you. To lock them use a cable lock like # CAB-10.

  • Platform Bike Rack Recommendation for Beach Cruiser Bikes Carried on a 2011 Toyota Prius
  • Be sure to check your owners manual to verify that it is safe to carry hitch mounted accessories with your 2011 Toyota Prius as some Toyota models recommend against doing so. If you find that you can, then the bike rack that I would recommend for your two beach cruiser bikes is the Swagman XC Extended Bike Rack, # S64650-EXT. This bike rack will accommodate wheel bases up to 68 inches and will fit in the Class I hitch on your 2011 Toyota Prius. Wheelbase is measured from the center of...

  • Recommended Bike Rack for Two Sun EZ-Sport Recumbent Bikes
  • I do have an option for you but the SportRack 2 Bike Platform Rack part SR2901LR has a maximum wheelbase of 58" therefore will not work with your Sun EZ-Sport Recumbent Bike that has a 60" wheelbase. Instead, you will want to use the Swagman XC-Extended Platform-Style 2 Recumbent Bike Rack part # S64650-EXT which is specifically for recumbent bikes and has a maximum wheelbase of 68" therefore will work with your bikes. The XC-Extended has upright arms with padded ratcheting hooks for...

  • Bike Rack Recommendation for a Bike E Recumbent with a 16 inch Front Tire
  • I have a solution for you, the Swagman XC-Extended Platform-Style 2 Bike Rack # S64650-EXT that you referenced would be the correct bike rack to use, but for attaching the front wheel of your Bike E recumbent that has a 16 inch tire you would want to use replace one of the inner wheel hoops of the # S64650-EXT with a replacement wheel tray part # SQ1011 and you would be good to go.

  • Hitch-Mount Bike Rack for Cruzbike Sofrider Recumbent and Standard Giant Cypress DX Bike
  • Thank you for including a photo of your bike. That is quite helpful. The Swagman XC 2-Bike Platform Style Rack # S64650 that you referenced is just a little short on wheelbase capacity for your Cruzbike Sofrider's 52-inch wheelbase, but Swagman does offer a specialized carrier just for recumbents, their XC-Extended Platform-Style 2 Bike Rack # S64650-EXT. This rack fits all 1-1/4-inch and 2-inch hitches and includes two sets of wheel hoops that give it plenty of room for your 52-inch...

  • Comparing Hollywood Racks HR100R & Swagman XC S64650EX Hitch Bike Racks
  • The main practical differences between the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider 2 # HR1000R and the Swagman XC-Extended Platform Rack # S64650-EXT are the maximum bike wheelbase that will fit (74-inches for the Sport Rider versus 66-inches) and the bike weight capacity (45-lbs for the Sport Rider 2 versus only 35-lbs for the Swagman). Another feature that favors the Sport Rider 2 is the 5-inches of rise on the rack's shank; this means better ground clearance with less chance of the rack scraping...

  • Recommended Hitch Mounted Bike Rack for Recumbent and Standard Bike
  • The Swagman G10 2-Bike Platform Rack # S64682 referenced in your question has the same 48 inch maximum wheelbase as the Yakima TwoTimer # Y02468 you mentioned that worked with your recumbent bike. Also like the Yakima rack, the Swagman G10 features ratcheting, padded hooks that can move independently along the center mast to fit bikes of different sizes. With this in mind, as long as your Rans V-Rex Recumbent bike fit securely on the Yakima TwoTimer, it should work great on this rack as...

  • Recommended Bike Rack Options For a Recumbent Bike
  • I have an option that will work for you, but the Lets Go Aero BikeWing Bike Rack, # B01311, is not designed for recumbent bikes. This bike rack will not support the wheelbase or the wide seat on recumbent bikes. Instead, I recommend the Swagman XC Platform Style Bike Rack, # S64650-EXT, for two wheel recumbent bikes. This bike rack has extended wheel platforms and will fit bikes with wheelbases up to 68 inches. If you plan on mounting two recumbent bikes, then you will need to mount...
