Recommended Swing Away Hitch for a Toyota Sienna

Updated 03/12/2026 | Published 03/04/2026

Question:

Hi there - can you help to recommend a swing arm hitch extender? I bought a 23x47 Carpod Walled Cargo Carrier w/ Lid - 2 Hitch from you guys a while back. I have a Toyota Sienna with 2 Eco hitch and Firestone air helper bags. The max tongue weight for the Sienna is 10. I was looking at the S86SR Swagman Swivel Hitch Extender but see its about 50 lbs. Any others to consider? Thanks so much.

Hey Chris, welcome back! The Yakima BackSwing Swing Away Hitch Extender item # Y02483 is going to be the best option as far as weight goes. It weighs only 35 lbs and has the common 250 lbs capacity. This will swing out 90 degrees to the passenger side and allow you to open your rear hatch.

The BackSwing item # Y02483 is going to be compatible with your 23x47 Carpod Walled Cargo Carrier item # M2205-2201 and 2" EcoHitch. However, the main issue you're going to run into with any of the Swing Away devices like item # Y02483 is they're going to reduce your hitches tongue weight capacity by 50%. This is due to the extended length past the hitch and the additional leverage.

What year is your Toyota Sienna? I can look up the tongue weight capacity of your EcoHitch and let you know what your maximum capacity is if you'll put that information below where it says Add Comment.

Thanks so much. I have a 2025 Sienna Limited AWD. Seems tongue weight might be an issue.

@ChrisC You're welcome! Your EcoHitch has a 700 lbs tongue weight capacity. You'll need to stay below 350 lbs total as far as the hitch and your Sienna's tongue weight capacity goes.

@JerredH thank you. I understood the tongue weight of the sienna is 10% ie 350 lbs of total 3500 towing capacity. Is the tongue weight limited by the sienna or the ecohitch? Thanks so much.

@ChrisC You're welcome! The tongue weight capacity is always determined by the lowest rated component, which is your Toyota Sienna. However, you're still at the same 350 lbs limit because the Backswing item # Y02483 only reduces the hitch's capacity by 50%.

We chose the swing-a-way! It is absolutely perfect! Steady, I can load it myself! We have made several cross country trips with this baby! Steady and solid! You won't be disappointed!

I have the yakima back swing swing away hitch extender and I love it. It works great, is easy to remove and replace when needed and gives me the flexibility to get into my SUV easily with multiple bikes on the back. It is rock solid too. Doesn't wiggle a bit! Fantastic purchase IMHO!

The reduction in hitch tongue weight capacity is due to the Sienna being a unibody vehicle. This means it does not have a full steel frame like trucks do. The body sheet metal makes up most of the structure with sections of steel in places for reinforcement. (Such as where the motor and transmission mounts are). That hitch bolted to a truck frame it would handle the full 700 rating. Bolted to unibody sheet metal that load capacity is greatly diminished. I own a Yakima Backswing and its a wonderful accessory we use for our two bike carrier. Its very strong and simply built so it should be reliable for many years.

@PatrickR The reduction of tongue weight capacity is for all vehicle's when they use the Yakima BackSwing item # Y02483 or a comparable extender/swing out.

The only thing I would worry about is the length causing you to bottom out hitting whatever it is you have on your hitch. I've had a customer complain that when we put it on their vehicle when they went out of a parking lot with low clearance they hit their bicycle rack on the ground because of the added length of the vehicle.

@EarthtribeC That's an excellent point that often gets overlooked. The BackSwing item # Y02483 will add 8-1/2" in distance. So your bike rack will still out 8-1/2" farther than it is now. The stacked receiver does raise the attachment point for your bike rack 3-1/2" to accommodate this.
