Jeff: Hello everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a look at this Taylor Made 36 inch long, steel, gas strut for boat hatches. Now this gas strut's designed to replace a worn out or damaged strut on your boat's hatch lid. It's designed to extend, to ease lifting of your hatch lid, and it will compress to gently close your hatch without slamming. It is a heat-treated steel construction, which is very durable, and it uses a corrosion resistant coating, which won't rust, even in saltwater areas.
Now it is a ball and socket installation. It attaches to the ball studs on the inside of your boat's hatch. And the connection type is a 13 millimeter ball socket with the spring C clip. And it does install easily in minutes. There's no special tools required.
I'm going to zoom in here, just so we can look at what I'm talking about.You can see there's the socket. And then the C clip is what goes around here. What you want to do to install this, or actually to remove it, you'll just pry this C clip just like that. And it'll rotate around and you can see once it rotates around, it will slide out and then you can remove it from your ball and socket. Put it back on your ball and socket.
Then all you have to do is just take the C clip, slide it back in over the ball and socket, and then push it back around and it clips in place, and we'll hold it into place. Very simple installation and removal.Now, when you do install this, you do want to make sure that this inner rod portion right here is facing down and it is always recommended to replace gas shocks and payers. The length on this from the center of this ball socket to the center of this is 36 inches. The compression force is 180 pounds and it is for a quantity of one strut. Worked well to replace cabin door hatch lid strut on a 2005 Hydra Sports 212 WA. Had to move the top mount back about 3/4" to allow the lid to close completely, but when the original part is no longer available, this is the way to go.
I used them to make a lift system for a pontoon rear lid. I rebuiilt a 1988 pontoon. The Gas Struts make it much eaiser!!!
Did a bit of research on how to install these shocks via [online video] and ordered this product and installed in my rod lockers. Great products all around, was offered support but did not need it (got lucky). I need to fish more but so far so awesome.
2008 Grady White boat needed a new hatch lift. Boat manufacturers are not like automobile manufacturers, and many times the customer is on his own to find older parts. This was a perfect fit for the worn out gas strut. Even thought the force was 10 pounds lighter than the original part, it works fine. I was most pleased as the size and connectors fitted perfectly to effect a quick sure fix.

Comparing this to the usual steel gas strut is like day and night. Seems well made, and looks great. More important is my review if etrailer. When my order did not arrive, I sent them email. Shortly, I was notified that it was being tracked. When tracking did not find it, I emailed etrailer again. They expedited delivery of a replacement.

Just what I needed
These worked well for my project. I was putting a concession stand style hatch in the basement wall that separates our play area from the living area. It took some research and a few tries to get them installed at the correct angle. I wanted the hatch to almost, but not quite touch the ceiling.

These struts worked phenomenal. I should have added them to our food trailer years ago. We retrofitted a 1972 Shasta Go Tag Along trailer and used real pine wood for a nice warm look. The side windows we cut into her were made of 2x4, plywood and pine wood. They were extremely heave and difficult to open. The struts were added and now they slowly open with by themselves. They are easy to close and only take one hand. Should have added them years ago!!
