Video Transcript for Review of Reese Fifth Wheel King Pin - Upgraded Pin Box - RP78FR

Hello, everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at the Reese 5th Airborne premium fifth wheel air ride coupler, has a 20,000 pound weight capacity. Now this 5th Airborne fifth wheel air ride extended pin box coupler will act as a buffer between your tow vehicle and the trailer. It minimizes the abuse sustained from turbulence on the road. This one here is designed for use with the following pin boxes. It'll work on Lippert 1621 and 1621HD, works on the Lippert 0719, the Turning Point series, the Rhino series, and also on the Fabex PB 600 series pin boxes.

Now using the air ride technology, this pin box would work to reduce chucking, help stamp out road shock, provides a nice, smooth towing experience. The air bag is located at the top of the pin box instead of on the bottom, makes it a lot easier to make your adjustments. Wanted to to zoom in here and just show you right up here is your air manifold, comes standard for an easy air fill and it uses a pressure relief valve to prevent overfilling. Right over here on this side, there's a little opening here. This is your air level indicator on the side.

So when you're filling it up, you'll be able to see it'll indicate low, medium, and maximum air pressure. Now, this does use an innovative forward pivot design and it does pass the SAE and CSA testing standards. It does, as you can see, include the mounting hardware. I have it all laid out here. Again, the specs on this, the gross trailer weight capacity is 20,000 pounds and the pin weight capacity is 5,000 pounds.

But that should do it for the review on this Reese 5th Airborne premium fifth wheel air ride coupler with the 20,000 pound weight capacity..

This kingpin is awesome! Short bed fifth wheel towing solved. I tow with a Crewmax Tundra and I never worry about hitting the cab. This pin solves the need to have a slider hitch (which are heavy, cumbersome and expensive. I needed to watch my weights as well since I tow with a 1/2 ton. No additional weight with replacing the pin. The ride is great too having the shock absorber and air bag in the pin box. Can't say enough good things about it. Once the wedge is set and aligned properly, you are set. Only negative is you need to drop and hook up straight on. It doesn't work well when dropping/hooking at an angle. I keep a torque wrench and a 5/8" socket with me in case I need to adjust the turret back to the "straight" position.

Love this pin box. The air ride provides the smoothest towing ride for our 36ft 5th wheel as well as our Chevy 2500HD High County over this rough spots and rail road tracks. This is our 2nd one as we just sold our last 5th wheel and felt we just had to have this same smooth ride with our newest RV. I’ve got to add that the sales and support by Tara G. Was outstanding, very knowledgeable and super friendly service. Many thx

by:

We just recently were able to take the 5th wheel out for a trip after installing the air ride coupler. Our ride was soooo much better, no more jerking in the cab and things bouncing round in the trailer. So glad that we made the purchase.

by:

This Airborne Kingpin box works great!
Our
hitch location in second-hand truck seems located in less than ideal position. This resulted in lots of "bucking & chucking" but Air-ride has changed it to gentle float at worse.

Great product at fair price!

5 stars on etrailers business model
This
is a bit dirty but that is one year in Florida

by:

I had a Fabex 5th airborne hitch pin on my other 5th wheel and was very pleased. Bought new 5th wheel and put on Reese 5th airborne hitch pin expecting the same performance, but the Reese does not perform as well as the old one. I have tried different air pressure and different air bag positions but cannot not find the smoothness I had with the old one. Also, I have had to touch up paint because of rust causing the paint to chip and come loose in certain areas. Just wish I could give it a better review.

by:

This pin box made a tremendous difference in my fifth wheel trailer. With the original pin box, the trailer controlled the truck and now it is the other way around. Now instead of huge jerks on rough roads, I get cushioned bumps. I can look in the rear view mirror and see the pin box absorbing the bumps.

by:

I like my airborne fifth wheel air ride coupler. Every thing inside out of the sun clean and neat looking. the best part is when there (some boon docking ) all the draws and cabinets are closed. A bad dip and bump is nearly smoothed out about five miles from home. Not worried about damaging 5th wheel. More relaxed drive. Yes it leaks some no big deal just like checking the tires. glade I did it!

by:

I ordered it and had it within a week. Installed the very same day and boy was I suprised how well it worked. Every 5th wheel should have one. You do not know it is even back there. I recommend e-trailer for all your trailer needs. And also it was extremely easy to install, less than 30 minutes I was done. Awesome product. Thanks
E-Trailer!!!!!!

by:

My hitch arrive much quicker than promised. Though I am 70 years old, I had no problem installing alone. I worked off the tailgate of my truck with a bottle jack and some blocks of wood. Thanks for the best price and great shipping.

by:

I bought the Reese fifth wheel king pin for a upgrade to the factory one. It was easy to install. What a big difference it made. After some adjustments, as per the instructions, no more chugging or very little. Now enjoy traveling with the Fifth wheel.

by:

Was easy to install on our 40' 5th wheel. Have towed over 4000 miles with no problems. Keep the proper amount of air in it and it makes towing a whole lot better

by:

This king pin has been one of the best purchases for hauling my fifth wheel with a short bed ram with ramboxes.

by:

ITEM WAS EASY TO INSTALL. TOOK LESS THAN 1 HR TO INSTALL WITH HAND TOOLS. JUST GOT BACK FROM 4200 MILE TRIP . INSTALLING COUPLER ON 2013 CYCLONE TOYHAULER 15500 LBS GVW .MADE RIDE LIKE DAY AND NIGHT DIFFERENCE . WENT FROM AZ TO ILL TO MINN AND BACK . I WOULD NOT PULL ANOTHER TRL WITHOUT THIS TYPE OF COUPLER AGAIN, GREAT PRODUCT.

by:

After having used the 5th Airborne Premium 5th Wheel Air Ride King Pin w/ Sidewinder and Turret for about 7,500 miles (one year of towing for me), I would not recommend this pinbox setup unless it was absolutely necessary for your application.

PROs: It does provide a nice ride quality (albeit with the occasional odd popping noise) and provides additional clearance for shortbed trucks (and the ability to pull a fifth wheel with a RamBox equipped Ram Pickup).

CONs: Poor quality. The turret is not completely square, it requires consistent maintenance for it to operate smoothly and the directions I received with the packaging was not clear (and did not match the posted online instructions which were more up to date). Also, as with all the recent Reese products I have purchased, the powder coat/paint was damaged on delivery and easily flakes off over time.

by:

I am very happy with this Sidewinder. No more having to slide my hitch in order to get my trailer out of storage. The only trick is making sure you are lined up with the pin box so the wedge engages correctly. You can hook up at any angle by just pushing the pin box so it lines up with your approach angle. It takes a little more time, but it is far easier than using an auto-slider.

Once you are hooked up, you no longer have to worry about tight turns or backing into spaces.

by:

The 5th wheel airborne king pin was straight forward to install. The product did help with the trailer chucking by absorbing some of the bounce. I did have a problem with the first time I used it with the bladder not holding air. Called customer service and had me test the inner air valve and it turned to be a bad valve, replaced it and it now works properly. I believe that the valve problem was caused by cold weather as it was 10 degrees below zero when we I tried to fill the bladder to leave on our trip to warmer weather. I am still trying to work on the amount of air to inflate the bladder to give the optimum ride. I recommend the product.

by:

I just installed my new pinbox it was an easy install. When completed I took my 5th wheel for a short trip to where I store it and it appears to work just as promised! Thank you!

P.S. your customer service was excellent Thank you again!

by:

The air valve stem would not accept air. Replaced the valve core to correct the problem. Fiberglass fairing on LongHorn 5th wheel would not fit new king pin box as it is longer that the original one. Just finished about 3500 miles with this new King Pin box, finding the ride somewhat improved, especially on rough freeway often found going through big cities. Did installation myself by first pushing box onto hitch, then using truck positioning and trailer jacks, was able to get box into correct position. Later repeated the exercise to lower the box one row of bolt holes to better match original king pin height.

by:

I pull a 34’ Reflection 5th wheel that is within the rated towing capacity for my 3/4 ton GMC, although I noticed it would bottom out when I went over abrupt bumps at highway speed. I added rear stiffeners to help that issue, but wanted to soften up the effect on the trailer by adding a cushioned pin box. I decided on the 5th Airborne to provide that softening effect. After a year in service I’ve noticed a big improvement in the ride, while the bouncing of the trailer is greatly reduced. The pin box was light enough for easy installation, while tough enough for the service. I have over 5,000 miles on it now and it is still working perfectly.

by:

Air fill valve was damaged in shipment ( as mentioned in many reviews). Etrailer had mfg send a new one overnight. I suggest that you ship with the fill valve not installed, having the customer install it when attaching to 5th wheel. Mfg sticker specifies that the attaching bolts be torqued to 200 ft. Lbs. Had to rent a torque wrench to install, thanks to my nephew, he was able to to apply enough pressure to achieve that setting. Hard for an old retired person to exert that much force.

Now the good stuff. We traveled from California to New York. By the time we got there, my back was in bad shape due to the severe chucking. Ordered the pin box to be delivered to one of our Campground stops. We're now half way home, and my back is not hurting at all. Chucking is gone, great product!

by:

Very well made pin box. Only had it on my 5th wheel for a month & traded the rig for a new 2017 fiver. It worked GREAT for the two trips we had it on the trailer. I removed this Reese pin box thinking that I may use it on my new rig, but the new fiver came with a similar air suspension box, so this one has been sitting in my garage for 10 months.
Anyone want a “like new” Reese air ride pin box for $400.00, please let me know.

by:

I received this just in time to install on our Reflection 303RLS before our winter trip to Bosque del Apache in New Mexico. Installation wasn't too difficult; I mainly did it myself with a little help from my wife and a lot of help from a hydraulic jack in my truck bed to hold one end in place. I tested it out on a short 15 mile tow with my Ford F250 and adjusted the air bag position and air pressure around 100 psi to get a nice ride. Now, after towing over 2000 miles of highways of varying quality, I can definitely report that the ride has been improved substantially. Also, I did not have to add any air over two full days of towing in each direction, so earlier leak problems seem to have been solved.

Just to clarify, my ride problem has always been up and down motion on uneven road surfaces, even on some interstates with bumpy lanes due to heavy truck traffic. I never experienced "chucking" problems, either with the old Lippert kingpin box or this new Reese Airborne box. With the improved ride that I experienced on this most recent trip, I am much more relaxed when driving these bumpy or wavy roads, and my wife is much happier not to hear my grumbling about poor highway maintenance!

by:

Installed the airbourne & went for a ride.Definitely works well reducing the chucking between truck & trailer aswell as the up & down bounce.Had alittle trouble adding air to the bag but that might of been my air chuck.Packaging was damaged, torn box but the product was ok after inspection.I read a question from another buyer whether to add the req.air before or after the trailer is on the truck.Your tech. advised to add air first before hitching trailer to truck then reduce pressure as req.which helped me with the set-up.
It's the end of the camping season so I will have to wait until next summer to try it somemore, otherwise very satisfied at this point. Greg C.

by:

I purchased this based on price and reviews I read. Definitely helps with the ride! Alot less bucking and chucking over dips and bridge crossings. I did have to do a bit of tinkering with air pressure in the bag and location of the bag to get the ride right. This is the reason I didn't give it 5 stars. Access to the lower air bag bolts are a pain to get at. Luckily I'm an auto technician and have a wide variety of tools to do it. I don't know how anyone would do this with a basic rachet without a flex head. If Reese ever redesigns this pin box they should add some access holes to the bottom for this adjustment. Only other issue is small.....the pin box interferes with my b&w release pin. Not a big deal, just have to put the lock pin in upside down. This box extends further past the pin

  • Is the Reese 5th Airborne Premium Fifth Wheel Air Ride Coupler the Same Length As the Rhino Pin Box
The Reese 5th Airborne Premium Fifth Wheel Air Ride Coupler part # RP78FR is categorized as a long style pin box. The dimensions are designed to mirror that of the pin box it replaces which one that uses a Lippert 1621 pattern. Therefore, you shouldn't have any issue with clearance using the new pin box. In other words, it's not any longer or at least significantly, than the one it is designed to replace. I have attached a photo below you can use to verify.

The 5th Airborne pin box being referenced in this question is not a Sidewinder/rotating pin box. It's actually just a standard air cushioned pin box like the # RP78FR. The degree of turnability with this setup will depend on the following factors: 1. The distance from the center of fifth wheel hitch jaw to the truck cab. 2.
