Does Curt Flex Air Pin box Sit Taller than Rota Flex Cushioned Pin Box

Updated 02/03/2026 | Published 01/31/2026

Question:

I currently have a Montana 3761FL with a Roto flex pinbox @ 13.4foot tall. I want to replace the Roto flex with a Flex Air 21k to achieve a better ride. But I am concerned about height. I have a BandW Companion hitch in a 2019 Ford F350 Dually. I have 1 bolt hole I can move the BandW down and 1 set of holes on the 1621 box I can mount the hitch higher. Which gives me approx 3.5inch of adjustment to move the rig nose down. I am hearing the Flex Air will be 6inch taller, will that work for me, or do I need to peruse another air ride pinbox alternative?

Hey Todd, welcome back! The Curt Flex Air part # LC369535 that you referenced will be a great option for a cushioned pin box that will make a noticeable difference in ride quality. This does not sit 6 inches taller than your current Rota Flex so there won't be issues from that either. Cushioned pin boxes like this are designed to be as close to same height as the stock pin box they are designed to replace so you will be good!

How did you like the Rotaflex? The Flex Air has the same cushioning as it plus vertical cushioning.

Hi, I am very happy with the Curt Flex Air pin box. It was about 1” different than My MORryde 1621 HD pin box. I moved the Curt up one set of holes on My GD Solitude ( went as high as I could go) I used socket head cap screws in the top mounting holes( for clearance issues) I also installed a small gauge that I can see from my pickup cab to monitor PSI. The pin box is constantly moving ( absorbing the road irregularities) Curt Flex Air takes the sharp jolt. As far as the bridge deck differences , if they are big, still get quite a bounce.( some bridge deck to road differences are nasty. The next step would be a Hensley air ride 5 th wheel hitch. But with that being said, I wanted to keep My Pullrite sliding hitch as I have a 6.6 ft box on my pickup. I have been very happy with the Pullrite hitch also. Oh, I also have air bags installed on the pickup, run 35 lbs of air in them when towing. My pin weight is a little over 3000 lbs. one last thing, We have the MORryde IS 7000 suspension. When roads are decent, ride is very smooth. Some of the roads are nasty! Thanks again Anthony P.S. tow veh is a 2020 Chev 3500 HD

Hey Todd, I bought this pin box last year. I tow a 2017 Sandpiper fifth wheel with a 2013 Ram 3500 dually. I too have a B and W companion hitch in my truck. I had the same exact concerns as you do. I had to put my B and W in the lowest position and mount the pin box as high as possible, which gave me a near level position. My fifth wheel weighs 14,000 lbs and it pulls the best with 80 lbs of air in the pin box. I could not believe the difference it made in my towing experience! I don't believe you'll regret buying this pin box. However, it is very heavy so you will need lots of help or mechanical assistance to get it mounted. I used my tractor with pallet forks to get mine into position.

@LeeH good call! When I installed one with my Dad we had to use a skid steer with a set of forks as well.

The hitch that came on my trailer was adjusted up into the trailer frame as far as it would go. With the curt I was able to bring the front of the trailer down another two inches to make the trailer level when towing. I have two set the air pressure about every two to three weeks or when the load changes in the garage of the trailer. I do not use a pressure gauge I just air it up to make the line on the shock with the line on the upper shock sleeve. You can tell a difference when it's not adjusted right. As far as the ride goes when you're pulling hard like up a grade and hit the rough cracks in the road you still get a hard hit feeling in the pickup.

So I bought a Curt Flex air about 2 years ago to help soften the ride and the pounding the RV takes on our highways. I did have the dreaded frame flex and thought a softer ride would help. We had the RV repaired and installed the Flex air and the ride is so much better for us, and I believe the RV. We now have about 6000 miles since the repair and installing the Flex air and so far everything is perfect. As far as the pin box itself. I did have to lower the hitch to its lowest position (Reese 27k) which was only 1 position lower then when I had the stock pin box. The airbag, as with any air filed bag does have to be filled from time to time. Which was a pain until I bought an inflater who's hose screws to the Shrader valve and stops at a pre set pressure rather then holding a filling chuck. The only other thing it that it is larger then the stock pin box due to the airbag. When you are parked it hangs a bit lower. Would I buy it again? YES I would. The ride is so much better. The RV kind of floats along behind the truck. And the hard banging and the chucking you get from the roads are minimized (not completely gone) but so much more comfortable.
