  • Designed to replace Lippert 1116 5th-wheel pin box
  • Weight capacity: 21,000 lbs

Notes:

  • Do not use the Trailair air ride pin box with any type of gooseneck adapter.
  • Because of the size of this item, it ships via truck freight.

Getting there is half the fun, right? Not if you're being bumped, jerked, jammed, and pushed around from the chucking and road shock that occurs as you tow your fifth-wheel trailer or RV. And imagine the costly wear and tear on your trailer as it endures that rocky ride.

Put the fun back into your trip and ease the stress on your trailer by replacing your factory pin box with the Trailair air ride pin box. The internal air bag and built-in shock work together to cushion your ride, improve handling, and limit strain on both your truck and your trailer.

Air Bag Absorbs Road Shock

Lippert Trailair air ride pin box air bag and shock

Standard pin boxes without any type of shock absorption transfer road shock to your trailer, resulting in potential damage to the trailer and an overall bumpy ride. But the Trailair air ride pin box absorbs shock and cushions your ride as you pull your fifth-wheel trailer. When you encounter uneven terrain on your trip or hit a pothole on the highway, the Trailair pin box compresses vertically, similar to how a pair of scissor blades closes in on each other. This compression transfers the road shock and vibrations to the internal air bag, saving your fifth-wheel hitch, trailer, or tow vehicle frame from enduring a rocky ride.

A built-in strut, or shock, controls the Trailair's compression so that the internal air bag doesn't burst. The strut also causes the pin box to appropriately rebound without any bounce, and positions it to be ready for the next bump in the road.

Simple Setup and Installation

First, simply remove your existing Lippert 1116 pin box from your trailer. The Trailair uses the same bolts that held on your original pin box so no additional hardware is required for installation. Plus, the Trailair pin box comes out of the box ready to be put on your trailer, so no assembly is needed. Because the Trailair is quite heavy, you should put it on an elevated surface or have a friend help you support its weight during installation.

Lippert Trailair air ride pin box air intake valve and inflation indicator

The internal air bag should be inflated after the pin box has been mounted on your trailer. Using the air intake valve, inflate the air bag until the outer cylinder of the shock rises high enough to fully expose the yellow inflation indicator sticker.

This kingpin changes the feel of chucking and sudden impact loading (bridge abutments at 70 MPH). The energy is translated differently than a rigid pin…. It does not eliminate chucking or impact load, but it has eliminated the sense that my stiff sprung dually is going to bounce my trailer to death. Would not be without it!

by:

Delivery was quick and product was as advertised. I called customer support (Danielle H) and she was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Danielle helped me make sure I ordered the proper Trailair king pin based on dimensions of my current 5th wheel.

by:

I think the air takes some of the roughness out of the ride. It seems better than my previous pin box. I believe however that the air chambers lose air over time and I have had to add air before some of my trips. I don’t think air chambers need to be replaced but monitored for air pressure.

by:

Can’t believe it can be so easy to back up with this hitch. Never go back to a standard hitch. I m sold forever but the capture plate for each hitch needs to be added to the hitch or at least give the part # for that specific item.

by:

Havent used it yet, but M19 pin box is well made. As usual, etrailer shipped it quick and it arrived with zero defects. Ill update after first use

Product works as advertised, but didnt reduce the chucking we get as much as Id hoped it would. Bottom line, it does reduce road stress over all and Id buy it again

by:

Great product. Easy installation. With regular hitch, truck jarred really hard at bridge transitions. The air ride hitch took all the jarring out of the truck. Chevy 2500HD Duramax. 40’ fifth wheel.

by:

Excellent item! Works exactly as promised. The only issue I have, which is a small one, is that I have to pump up the doughnut before every trip because the air will leak out. Not a big deal because I have the compressor out to pump up the tires anyway. This pin box takes 98% of the chucking and side-to-side motion out of our fifth wheel. Makes for a lot less white knuckle driving, eases everyone's nerves, and we arrive at our destination without the near whiplash we used to have. If you are looking for a way to ease the ride, this is an excellent product to accomplish that goal.

by:

The TrailAir pin box is a good upgrade from an entry level unit. You have to learn what the ideal air pressure needs to be for your rig, ie, trial and error.
The TrailAir calms the fifth wheel trailer quit a lot going over bridge entries and over rough roads. It would be nice if they would install a tee on the air inlet port with the air add fitting and an air pressure gauge so that one could see the actual bladder air pressure anytime.

by:

We bought a new fifth wheel right after we bought the pen box and we were going to have it put on our new fifth wheel but the bolt holes didn’t match up. Therefore it was never used and has been sitting on our RV LOT ever since. We couldn’t rate because never used it but only way it would let us submit our comments

Congrats on the new RV! I suspect what happened is that the new RV does not have a Lippert 1116 5th-wheel pin box. This does mean that the mounting bolt pattern will be different which you discovered. I think that your best bet will be to sell the pin box. If you can tell me the pin box number of the pin box that is on your new RV I can tell you if there is a Trail Air pin box that will work.

Air Ride Pinbox arrived on time and in excellent condition. It is a perfect fit and was an easy installation.
Thank You,

I towed our Keystone Raptor about five thousand miles with the original pin box before I decided to try to smooth out the ride so purchased and installed the Trailair Air Ride 5th wheel pin box. I have since towed it approximately Six thousand miles and We are completely satisfied.

by:

Quick shipping in good communication

by:

Exact fit replacement for cheap Keystone OEM part. Fit was so exact, I installed it by myself. Arrived earlier than expected. I hope this will reduce the chucking and smooth out the pull of a 16K RV trailer. I did have to purchase additional bolt sets from my local Home Depot (OEM was 12 sets, this is 18 sets 5/8-11 x 2in Grade 8 with flat and lock washers all torqued to 180 ft lbs).

This is a great unit on our Montana 34foot, we are in New Zealand and it arrived in great condition and the team at E Trailer are great

by:

So far so good. It took me about 3 Hrs to R& R. Faster than I thought.

by:

Have put around 10K miles on the hitch so far and it has performed well. An extra step in the pre-departure checklist to check the airbag pressure/ride height, but it is worth it as it greatly reduces the jarring from pot holes and abrupt changes in road surface. Installation was easy; perfect fit.

Pin box made a significant improvement in both reducing shock loads to the hitch and chucking. Only drawback is the need to adjust air pressure as ambient temperature andor elevation changes. If you have one of these hitches, you will want a small compressor in order to top it up. Due to the pin plate being at an angle while not connected to the hitch airbag fully extended with no load, the trailer needs to be slightly lower than it would appear in order to load up the airbag as the pin assembly makes contact with the truck hitch. Practice makes this easier to eye ball. Powder coating was a disappointment, and the paint lifted at almost every 90 degree angle and required repainting after only a year. Other than that, Im a satisfied customer.

by:

This is my second trailair pin box and I just love them it takes all of the bouncing out of the truck in the camper and makes it a smooth ride. Shipping was great and product came packaged as good as possible.

by:

Have not did a road test yet but it’s installed.
Way heavier than factory. I have talked to many that have this and like it.
Helps reduce chucking back and forth movement. Nothing will be solve all if you are on a rough road you will feel it.
No hitch will eliminate.
Was fairly easy to install you will need help to lift. I used the tailgate on the truck and backed under and used blocking to get in place. I installed pretty much myself. My wife help some with aligning the bolts.

by:

The pin box arrived in satisfactory condition. I have to install at this point. More to follow.

by:

Good looking product. Mounted it on a Montana 40ft 5th wheel. It arrived 2 weeks ahead of schedule. It was easy to install. I did have to grind the corners of the trailer frame bracket as the jaw hinge wouldn’t allow the bolt holes to line up. Once the corners were ground, everything lined up perfectly. It only took my son and I to pick up the pin box and once the first bolt was in, it was simple and easy to do the rest. There are 3 things to complain about. 1. The position of the air valve sucks. Really hard to get at. 2. The mark on the shock for proper inflation is not marked well. Had to get on hands and knees with a flashlight to actually see it. It was suppose to be bright yellow, it’s black, same as the shock. My 3rd complaint would be the fact that I had to drill 3 holes into the pin box to reattach the brake safety cable and the electrical wire box. The biggest positive thing is, is how much of a difference it has made in the ride quality for not only with the trailer but the truck as well. Soooo much smoother than the original pin box. Would I buy another one? You better believe I would. Wondering why I didn’t buy it sooner. Won’t have another 5th wheel without it.

Dependable, sturdy, no issues. Now, if theyd fix the roads!!!

The pin box arrived on time and in perfect condition. The shipping company even off-loaded it into a covered area out of the weather for me.

I purchased this Lippert Air Ride hitch for my 40 foot Genesis Supreme trailer and wish I had bought it 2 years ago and installed it. What a difference is has made both in the trailer when towing as well as the difference in my truck while pulling it down the road. eTrailer had the best price and fast shipping. They as well helped me with verifying the right part number that works with my trailer. I purchase many parts and accessories from eTrailer and will continue to purchase from them in the future.

My hitch is working great! It has made a big difference in how well the trailer rides on my truck. No more harsh bumps when I drive over rough roads or poor bridge approaches. Awesome product!

by:

Freight co delivery estimated for Friday, arrived today. (Tuesday). Borrowed a tractor, dropped the old and lifted this monster into place. 12- 15/16 bolts (originally) 18 hole mount. Not sure if the height is correct for the bed, but will adjust it down if after the rubber bumper is inflated, if it doesn’t sit level. The bolt pattern was correct. better get help! From dropping the MFG lippert, to getting the thing lifted an bolts snugged up, about 45min. Will take a bit longer to attach the deadman switch and electrical box. Well crafted, definitely heavy. This should save my truck n RV from porpoising damage as I’m going over Bridges and bad roads.

We finally was able to hook up and take the RV from Home to Mt. Home Arkansas and up and down the Mountains over to Tennessee. The hook up is different than something without the AIR rubber inner tube. I have to raise the landing gear about 3 or more higher. The pin box then slides into the coupling. I also bought a new Curt fifth wheel.I get the rough roads but the porpoising is not noticeable.I like it and so far its a great fit.

by:

A nice addition to our 5th wheel, helped smooth out the ride, especially on the roads up north

by:

Looks great, way heavier than factory, easy change over. I did have to trim the corner of trailer frame to get room by the pivot pin in hitch. Looking forward to our trip north to see the difference

  • How to Determine the Pin Box Manufacturer and Model on a 5th Wheel Trailer
There should be a sticker or plate on the pin box itself that lists the manufacturer and model of the pin box. If it is not present then there are some measurements you can take to determine the model of the pin box. I have included a link that explains these measurements for you. Once the pin box is identified we can determine if there is an air ride pin box that will fit.

Hey Michael, so the Curt Trailair part # LC155943 that you referenced was not designed to offer a different ride height from the pin boxes it replaces so it would not be the way to go if you were wanting to make a height adjustment. What I would do is try the higher mounting bolts like you mentioned and see if that gets your trailer level while also keeping at least 6 inches of clearance between the bed rails and the trailer overhang. If that still does not fix the problem then you'd need...
