Video Transcript for Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to take a look at, and show you how to install, the Lippert Component Smart Jack electric trailer jack with footplate. This is designed to work on A-frame trailers. It has a black housing. The part number is LC643589.Now the Smart Jack's designed just like all other electric jacks, to aid you in hooking up and disconnecting your trailer from the vehicle. It's going to eliminate all the standing out there cranking it up and down to get it to the right level. But, it takes it a step further giving us internal memories to select our hitch height.

It allows us to program a particular height we want the jack to get our trailer to. That will then allow us to know that when we're backing up our ball mount's not going to be running into the coupler. We're not going to have to worry about it being so high that it's going to come up and make contact maybe with the back of the truck. Now, in order to get your settings where you want them . We're going to have our coupler right here where we're at now. And, we'll hold down both the up and the down arrows for five seconds.

You see it's going to flash. That means we've saved that height, and we'll just lower it down some. Now, with it lowered down we'll get it to return back to hitch height. We're going to press down those same two buttons three times, holding on the third. Now, you can see without hitting the buttons it's going to return right back up to that original setting that we had.

Now, it's back up at it's original height. We know we're ready to lower it down to our coupler and make our connection. Now, to get it to auto-retract we're going to hit the down button three times, holding it on the third. This is going to fully retract the leg of that jack up and get us in the travel position once we lift up our footplate. You'll notice once it gets to each of those positions it's automatically going to stop.We also have a couple unique designs here on the head of the jack. You'll see all of our buttons are covered so we don't have the old style rocker switches that sometimes let in moisture.

We've got the button for our light right here. And, it's also going to give us a battery meter. We've got it hooked up to just a 12-volt power source now. It's indicating to us what charge that, that battery has. This can also help out if you're hooked up to your onboard battery to give you a quick look and see just how much juice that you really have stored in it.Now, also something very unique about this jack, that you don't see on a lot of them . Of course, it has the drop leg. This gives us 4-1/2 inches of adjustment over four hole locations. So, we've got 1-1/2 inches at each jump. But, look at the size of the footplate here. This is 9 inches. This is definitely much larger than what you see on most jacks. So, if you've got a situation where you're in softer terrain, this is going to be a really good solution. It's going to spread that weight over a much greater area and drastically reduce any sinking in, especially in the mud, sand and things like that. Now, the finish on the outer tube here . You can see it's a nice powder coat finish. It seems to be very durable, not like some of the cheaper finishes we see on some of the other styles. And, then on the inner tube we're going to have a full zinc coating on that inner tube, our drop leg and foot plate there. So, we really shouldn't have to worry about corrosion for a very long time. You'll see the head of the jack . It's also going to offer a very sleek look. It has more contour and more shape than what you see out of most standard jacks. It looks like it's sealed pretty well. We've got a seam that runs down along the side all the way here, but that's going to be a joined seam so we shouldn't have any moisture getting in there. Then the cap for our manual override . It's going to be stored right in the top. Now, this is if you have a failure of your battery or your power source from your truck. Something I like . You can see this is a rubberized plug, sealed all the way around and it's raised around that edge. So, I don't think you'll have any issues with moisture or anything like that getting in.You'll see we do have the speed wrench designed emergency crank handle here. You can lower that down and then either raise or lower to get our jack to operate for us. This is a 19 mm socket basically. So, if you wanted to use a different type of tool you just need a 19 or three-quarter.Something else unique . Once we do turn the lights on, with that button we talked about on the top, you'll see how we're going to have LEDs all the way around the tube of the jack. That projects down, not only to our coupler, but also to each side where we might be needing to hook up our weight distribution. As you can see, it is a nice, bright light. I think it would actually be effective at lighting the areas to help you out versus some of the other jacks that just don't seem to emit very much light. Also, to make sure our jack is very visible at night . You can see we've got the high-visibility markers here on each side. So, whether you're pulling into your lot or maybe backing up to your trailer they should stand out so you can see them.We keep everything protected. You'll see we've got a 30 amp fuse here in our inline fuse housing. Now, it's nice that this is included, because this doesn't come with all the jacks available and help keep everything protected for you. Now, here's our jack fully extended. As you can see, it gives a lot of elevation. It looks like from the ground to the top here, or our bracket is what we call it, it about 32-1/4 inches. Now, to begin your installation you're going to want the old jack removed from your trailer. You'll have the footplate taken off of the new jack and, of course, you'll have to support the tongue to keep it up off the ground. We're using jack stands. And, be sure your trailer's properly chocked. At that point we're just going to slide the tube down in the opening here on the top of the trailer. Remember that needs to be at least 2-1/4 inches. We slide that through. We'll want to ensure that it goes through the holes all the way down. And, then we'll just align the three holes that we have here with the holes in our trailer. We can use the provided hardware to attach it. We're going to have flange bolts. Now, if your trailer required nuts on the bottom . If it's a hole that's just been drilled through the coupler rather than threaded, then be sure to use the appropriate size nut, probably washer, flat washer and lock washer on it as well. Now, we'll go through and snug down all three of our bolts. We're going to use a 1/2 inch socket. Then, we'll torque them to the specifications in our instructions. We're at that point where we can just reinstall our footplate. Now, for our connection we're going to connect the red wire, that comes from the jack, to our power supply. If you have a battery onboard you'll want to connect this to that. That's going to be your best solution. That'll give you power all of the time. If you don't have a battery onboard you can run it to your vehicle power. That's what we're going to need to do. We don't have an onboard battery. Our power comes through the trailer wiring, goes into our junction box and we've got our power lead here. So, we're going to strip that lead back and I had a butt connector. Now, since we're on the outside of the vehicle we're going to use a heat shrink. This is part number DW05745. It's available on our website. We got that ready. Once you have the length you need I like to use a couple zip ties around the tube of the jack here, just to keep that wire held in snug against it. You can see . We'll extend this out and run it back to our connector. Trim off any excess we have on the backside of the fuse holder. Then, we'll get it stripped back and connected to that butt connector. Now, for your butt connector you can use a lighter, a mini-torch or, of course, a heat gun. I'm just going to gently heat it all the way around. Now, we can hook our jack up to our power supply. If it was our battery we're already set. If not, you'll want to hook it up to your vehicle. Then, we'll run it down and allow it to support the weight. That's going to complete our look at the Lippert Smart Jack, part number LC643589.

  • Replacement Option for Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack
There was indeed a recall on the Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack part # LC643589. It sounds like you have a pre-recall version but in order to confirm you can look on the back of the jack for a sticker on the stem with a serial number. If there is no serial number present or if it is lower than SJWP2017-07-0001, then the jack was made prior to the recall and it will need to be replaced. In regard to who is responsible, that is not really my place to say but most people will...

  • Is There a Way to Replace Cracked Screen on Lippert Smart Jack
The only way to get a new control panel would be to replace your entire Smart Jack with part # LC643589. I reached out to my contact at Lippert who confirmed that the only replacement parts for the jack includes hardware like the pin or the footplate. With this being the case your best option to protect the buttons is a trailer jack cover like part # UF38-944020. If you'd rather use a different jack then I recommend the Husky Brute Electric Trailer Jack # HT87247 because it is rated...

  • How Was the Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack Updated After Recall
As with any manufacturer's recall, the old stock obtained by the vendors will be bought back from the manufacturer and replaced with the new updated version when available. The part number for the product rarely ever changes. I checked with our purchaser and can confirm that the Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jacks part # LC643589 which we have in stock are the post-recall version which has an updated housing that will resist water leaking onto the control board and cause the jack...

  • How to Gain Clearance for Tailgate When Hooked Up to Trailer with Weight Distribution System
I do have a solution for you, however the head by itself on the Lippert Smart Jack # LC643589 cannot be turned and the mounting plate doesn't really allow for a clean install if the entire jack is rotated. With this in mind your best option is going to be to swap out your existing weight distribution shank with a longer one that will push the trailer back far enough to allow clearance for the tailgate. I recommend taking a look at the Curt Weight Distribution Shank # C17122 which measures...

I spoke with Lippert about the issue you are having with your Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack part # LC643589 and they informed me that this sounds like an issue with the circuit board. In order to test this you will need to remove the motor cover using the screws at the bottom and then test for power at the switch while power to the light is flipped on and off. If you have power to the switch while the light is off then you know there is an issue with the circuit board and the...

I spoke with my contact at Lippert Components and they have not yet heard of the issue you are having with the Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack part # LC643589. However, the first thing you are going to want to do is test for power at the red wire just before it enters the jack. There should be 12 volts here but if there is not then you will need to check your battery to make sure it is fully charged. I would also make sure you have a suitable bare, clean metal ground. If the LED lights on your Lippert Smart Jack # LC643589 are flashing while you are using it then you need to check your wiring. Look for any places where it might be corroded, bent, damaged, or exposed and replace as necessary. If all of the wiring looks good then it could also very well be your battery. If your battery...

I found that your 2017 Keystone Bullet 243BHS has a dry weight of 4,685 lbs and can carry up to 1,815 lbs meaning that the most your trailer will weigh is 6,500 lbs. This will put your TW at 650 lbs - 975 lbs. I recommend going with a jack...
