Can Gas Tank/Propane Tank be Carried on etrailer Hitch Cargo Carrier

Updated 03/11/2026 | Published 05/29/2025

Question:

Curious how do you guys best recommend securing a 20 propane cylinder and a 2.5 or 5 gallon jerry can for gasoline on this hitch cargo carrier? I know some folks dont recommend carrying flammables in a hitch carrier, but I dont have much of an option...

Hey Gus, you can carry a propane tank or a gas can on the etrailer cargo carrier part # e98874 even though when you think about it does seem a little sketchy. There are no laws against it and as long as you are smart and safe about it it's totally fine. Do you have tie downs/ratchet straps?

Hey Gus, did you have a chance to secure your propane cylinder and jerry can with tie downs or ratchet straps on the cargo carrier? I'm asking because your experience could help others who are considering similar setups.

@JamesonC What I actually did was load everything in one of those big eTrailer hitch carrier bags. It was full enough that nothing was going to roll around in the bag. I secured the zippers partially open to allow for ventilation using a long-ish cable lock.

In Texas it IS legal per the Texas Railroad commission who is the authority on such matters. As long as you don’t exceed a combined weight of1000lbs of propane on a single non commercial vehicle. In my case, I bought a FRONT mount hitch receiver (1000lb max tongue weight) from e-Trailer and a HEAVY DUTY cargo carrier from PakMule (Packmule Pro). The Hitch Receiver I bought: (EH57FR EcoHitch Hidden Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - 2"). It’s a beast! And this is the crazy strong cargo carrier I put with it “Pakmule Pro” https://pakmule.com/products/pakmule-pro I then purchased two (2) Dual mount 30lb propane mounting units (designed for RV’s and mounted the dual tanks (running laterally, front to rear) one pair on each outer edge of the pakmule pro. And then I mounted a Predator 11,500K Inverter generator between the two sets of Propane tanks. I topped it off with two Propane Tank Locks one for each side, also available from e-Trailer, “TorkLift Fortress GasLock Kit for Propane Tanks”. The whole setup was a little expensive but it enabled me to carry 120lbs of propane and a 11.5K inverter generator on a front mounted Cargo rack leaving my rear hitch open to haul my RV for extended boon-docking. Wife says it looks like MadMax, I think it looks pretty awesome. Note, this is on a 2500HD Silverado truck. Don’t advise doing this on a half ton truck since the front cargo rack is now under about 600lb load just by itself. One more thing. I ordered one more essential accessory from e-Trailer to make this who set up safe. . I bought 4x “SNAP Pad Donuts” the ones designated for “6~8 inch diameter wheels” (cost was $29.00 each) and placed one each under the 6.5” diameter generator wheels.. They fit PERFECTLY and the result has fully immobilized my generator from rolling or moving at all… with the help of a few tie-down straps to pull and hold the generator down into the grooves of the snap pads donuts of course.

@Sr I also have a Pakmule and I'm looking for ways of securing my propane tank. Would you mind sending me a picture of your propane setup? [email protected]
