Will the Folding RV Bumper Cargo Carrier Work If My Bumper Is Tight Against the Trailer?

Question:

On the fold up bumper cargo carriers when they are folded in the up position do they completely cover the width of the 4 bumper? My bumper sits under the trailer a little bit. There isnt space between the bumper and the trailer. It sits alittle lower than the trailer but there is no gap between the 2. I dont think the fold up carrier will work on my bumper. Thanks Randy

Thanks for writing in.

Based on your description, I don't think the folding feature of the etrailer Cargo Carrier for RV Bumper # e96ZR is likely to work. When the carrier is folded into the upright position, it pivots very close to the bumper. If your 4-inch square bumper sits directly against the rear of the trailer with little to no clearance, the carrier may contact the trailer before it can fully fold up.

I've attached a couple of photos showing the carrier in the folded position so you can get a better idea of how close it sits to the back of the RV. Hopefully, they'll help you compare the available clearance on your trailer to see if it would work.

If your RV has a 2-inch trailer hitch receiver installed on the back, a hitch-mounted cargo carrier may be a better option since it doesn't rely on clearance behind the bumper. The 24x60 etrailer Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches - Steel - Tilting - Folding - 500 lbs # e98874 could be a great option instead.

I never fold this up as it is always loaded and that was my purpose for buying it. Measuring my pivots if it was folded up, it probably takes all but a half inch of the bumper towards the front of the trailer. I believe if you were flush to the back wall, you would still have room to fold up, but it would probably hit your tail lights and or you would need a piece of foam pipe insulation to stop vibrating/scratching. This is a great rack very heavy duty was easy to install. The other reviewers on missing square plugs and paint chips already are correct but that’s minor stuff. I’m willing to deal with.

@i have one on a small Winnebago i hade to build a new 4-inch square tube bumper because mine was aluminum. if your bumper is flush with the rear of your rig and has a 1/2-inch gap between the top of the bumper and the bottom of your rig it should fit. KateF
