Video Transcript for Hayes Brake Controller - Proportional Controller - HA100400C Review

Speaker 1: Today we're taking a look at the Hayes air-actuated trailer brake controller. The brake controller activates your trailer brakes in proportion to your vehicle's braking action. It activates immediately so there's no pausing, like with time-delayed brake controllers. The air-activated controller ties in to your vehicle's air brakes to sense the amount of pressure that you apply to the brakes, so thus, you don't automatically adjust the trailer's braking based on how you depress the brake pedal in your tow vehicle. The rate of brake application can be increased or decreased by turning the controller handle. Also, right here, there's a red LED indicator on the front of the unit that shows when the trailer's brakes are applied, and the light will glow brighter as trailer output increases.

The unit also features hazard flasher immunity that prevents pulsing of the brakes when flashers are activated. It does have the slide bar manual override. It's a nice, compact controller. Has a black textured finish to it, metal construction. It also comes with the mounting bracket and hardware to get it mounted, so it would basically just sit like this, and then you can mount it in a convenient location with the included hardware. The product is made in the USA.

It's designed for tow vehicles with air brakes and trailers with up to four axles or eight brake assemblies. This is designed for use with electric brakes or electric over-hydraulic trailer brakes. When it comes to wiring, the white wire is the ground, black wire is the main power wire, and then the red wire goes to the brake light switch, and the blue wire is positive power to the trailer brakes.A few measurements to go over with you real quick. Overall length from this point here to this point here measures about 8 1/2 inches. Overall width, side to side, is about three inches, and the overall thickness is about one inch.

Then when it comes to the air input port thread size, we're looking at 1/8 inch MPT.That's gonna do it for today's look at the Hayes air-actuated trailer brake controller.

the information provided with the is stall is very veg they could have told you where to get a check valve they could have showed you in detail how and where to hook into the air valve , what lines to hook into , or offed a video on how to install for what it cost it is a rip off, you need to let hays know this for future sales 619342

This is a pretty specialized piece of equipment whose install procedure will vary according to the vehicle it is installed in. At this time, we have not had the opportunity to install one, which is why we do not have a video to provide.

I have not hooked up the unit yet. I have an overland osprey diesel pusher(dp). The coach has an exhaust brake. When the exhaust brake engages the brake lights automatically come on. Using a conventional electric brake controller like the Prodigy P2 would engage the trailer brakes when ever the exhaust brake engages, causing the trailer brakes to burn up on long down grades. I know this can be fixed by adding a diode in the wiring, but that involves tracing a lot of wires until I found the right one. this unit doesn't need to connect to the brake lights. it only needs the air pressure being applied to the brakes to engage the trailer brakes. It really is a sweet unit for a DP with air brakes. 682528

Ask the Experts about this Hayes Brake Controller

Do you have a question about this Brake Controller?

  • Hooking a Gooseneck Trailer with RV 7-Way Plug to 1999 International 9100 7-Way Round Plug
  • The first thing that you need is the Pollak Trailer Connector Adapter # PK12-724 which converts the 7-Way round connector on your 1999 International 9100 to a 7-Way blade style connector. This will plug into your 9100 and provide a pace to connect the gooseneck trailer wiring. The next step is to then use the Roadmaster Brite-Lite Wiring Converter # RM-732 on your trailer side wiring right behind the 7-Way. This converter takes separate brake and turn signals and combines them so that...

  • We do offer brake controllers such as the Hayes Air Actuated Trailer Brake Controller # HA100400C that takes in air pressure and converts it to an electrical signal for trailer brakes, but this item is not compatible with electric-over-hydraulic brakes, only electric drum brakes. For your application I suggest the Prodigy P2 # 90885 that you referenced. It has a setting for EOH brakes. You will also need an installation kit # ETBC7 to enable a hardwired installation. When it comes to hardware, like the brake line, I recommend going with the Kodiak Hydraulic Brake Line Kit # 24TA-BLKIT which will wear better than other traditional brands. These lines are very flexible so the line is easy to maneuver under the trailer. The only downfall is that you cannot cut the line due to how hard and risky it is to do yourself. All you have...

  • Brake Controller on Tow Vehicle with Air Brakes
  • The Hayes Air Actuated Trailer Brake Controller # HA100400C is designed to be used with a tow vehicle that has air brakes. However, that doesn't make it your only option. Electric brake controllers tie into the stop light switch of the tow vehicle so it doesn't matter what type of brakes it has. For an electric brake controller I suggest the Prodigy P3 # 90195 because it's one of the most reliable and easy to use brake controllers on the market.
