Proportional Braking

With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking, or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently


So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in that same manner


As long as the Dexter Predator DX2 controller is properly mounted, it will sense - via an internal sensor - how your tow vehicle brakes. The sensor responds to the deceleration of your tow vehicle as you brake by signaling the controller to send out enough power to your trailer brakes so that they are activated with an intensity that matches. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time


Power Output Control

Dexter Predator DX2 Power Gain Wheel

The power output control on this brake controller lets you set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. Typically, the power output is only readjusted if you switch from a heavy, loaded trailer to a much lighter, empty trailer - or vice versa.


During the initial setup process, you can use the thumbwheel to adjust the power output. To get more power to your brakes, increase the power level. To decrease the power output, lower the power level.


Sensitivity Adjustment with Deceleration Sensor Lever

Once you have the overall power set, you can fine-tune the power output by adjusting the sensitivity of the internal sensor. Use the lever to achieve your desired degree of intensity. Move the lever toward you to delay the power output, creating braking sensitivity that is ideal for lightweight setups. If you are towing a heavy load, you may want to have the trailer brake more aggressively to prevent it from pushing your tow vehicle. To get a stronger stopping action, move the lever so that it points away from you.


Large Digital LED Display

The unit also features a large digital LED display, which shows the controller's power settings. It also shows the voltage, allowing you to easily identify that the trailer brakes are receiving power.


Slide-Bar Manual Override

This unit comes with a manual override lever on the front that lets you activate the trailer brakes without needing to activate your vehicle's brakes. When you use the manual override, the amount of power sent back to the trailer brakes will be the maximum amount of power, regardless of the preset power level you selected during setup. This ensures that you will always get the most effective braking in an emergency situation. In addition to being a necessary safety feature, this option also helps to control trailer sway by slowing the trailer to put it back solidly behind the tow vehicle.


You can also engage the manual override to help you move a sliding 5th-wheel hitch closer to your truck's tailgate for tight maneuvering during slow speed turns. Just apply the manual override to hold the trailer in place while slowly moving the tow vehicle forward.


Quick, Simple Installation

Because the controller operates with an internal inertia sensor, it must be mounted between -35 degrees and 90 degrees in the vertical plane. During initial installation, the deceleration sensor lever must be positioned straight up and down. The device must also be mounted on a level horizontal (side-to-side) plane and must be lined up with the direction of travel for the internal sensor to function properly.


This brake controller is designed to be hardwired into your vehicle.
