Video Transcript for Darby Extend-A-Truck Hitch Cargo Carrier Review - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

Today on our 2016 Toyota Tacoma we're doing a test fit of the Darby Extend a Truck hitch mounted load extender, part number DTA944. Now, we already have it here in our first position, we're going to go over some features of this position and then we'll show the second one. This position is going to be great for anytime that you have anything that you want to put on your vehicles roof and it's longer than your truck. If you have a roof rack system and you want to throw some lumber or some PVC pipe up there, our Extend a Truck is just going to give you some extra stability there. Now, we're going to take some measurements here. Do our ground clearance first, at about 17 inches. Closest point is going to be about 5 and a quarter inches.

Overall, it's going to be about 7 and a quarter inches. We're not adding much to the back of the vehicle, but we're still allowing for a lot of load to be put on our vehicle. We also have these great tie down points here, so you can fit a strap through and secure your load. We also have an option to adjust this T piece here to different heights, so if you have a ladder or a roof rack that's a little higher, you can push up on our load extender and have that even with that. Now, we're going to show you our second position here. I'll start off by removing our pin and clip.

Then we'll just slip this piece off and set it off to the side. Then we'll remove our second pin and clip here. Now, the first one is included, but this one is not, so you'll have to purchase that on our website, this part number is PC3. Take our long piece and just flip that around, and we'll reinsert that hitch pin and clip. Now, we can take our T piece here and we'll just insert it.

Then, I like to open my tailgate so I can make sure that it's level, or as close to level as we can get it. All right, now, between the end of our tailgate and our load extender, we have about 31 and a quarter inches. Then overall, we're adding about 49 and a half inches. Just bear that in mind, whenever you have anything loaded up on your truck bed, that it is going to have that much space in between the tailgate and where it will contact that load extender, and then how far that load extender sticks out. Again, this is going to be great if you have a kayak, or any type of PVC pipe, lumber, anything that's larger that you need to fit on to your vehicle. That's going to be our completed look at the Darby Extend A Truck hitch mounted load extender, part number DTA944, on our 2016 Toyota Tacoma.

The rack fulfilled all expectations, was concerned about how it might affect vehicle stability, HANDLED GREAT !! I would suggest that the manufacturer add 2 more tie down eyes to the longer extention section, for convenience. Again, very satisfied. 296270

I’ve only just received this item so I can not give an opinion on functionality but it feels like a solid piece of equipment. I love that it can be disassembled for easy storage. It arrived on time. My only disappointment was that it did not contain a safety flag that it was supposed to come with. Aside from that, I would definitely still purchase this extender regardless. I have a short bed Dakota that Keeps me from starting any projects due to limited truck bed space for towing wood longer than 8 ft. I would buy from this company again. Blake 448455

My problem was how to transport securely my 16' kayak in the 6.5' bed of my Toyota Tundra. Tne Darby "Extend-A-Truck" concept appealed to me and since the price was very reasonable, it was Made in USA and shipping paid, I bought one and it has proven to be "just what I needed". My kayak loads easily, is safe when mounted (I taped a 4' length of foam pipe insulation over the Extend-A-Truck" crosspiece to protect the hull) and is very secure in transit. I am very glad I bought this product. 159075

Got this to use on a 2018 Jeep Wrangler JK to carry a kayak. I wasn't sure if it would clear the 32" spare tire on the Willys model but it does. When not in use it stores away real easy also. 490888

Great extender but take note I bought this to use with a canoe in the bed. It works great for that - strong, easy to load, I love it for what it does. Very worth the money. One thing to note about the description, though, is that the L piece does NOT fit in the cab of my truck. It's too long to fit behind the seat in my 2008 Tacoma Access cab. Other than that I love the thing. 3071

The Darby Extend a Truck comes just as advertised and is perfect for my kayak and surfboards. The hitch mount is a little loose, but tying it down well is no problem. etrailer customer service is excellent and they ship fast. The same item can be found at a lower price however. 12433

The "Truck Extension" (mfgr's name for it) arrived today, in excellent condition. It's heavy - as it needs to be - & appears well-built. Both pins needed to use it were included, as shown in the product photo. It will be used on a F-150 Crew Cab (only a 5-1/2' bed) to haul longer lumber. The cross-bar is just enough over 10 feet out on my truck that I may drill another mount hole to move it in when needed. The welded loops on the cross-bar are spaced just about right to stabilize 4-foot wide sheets. A not-so-obvious nice feature: disassembled, the long bar slides inside the cross-bar, making it convenient to store and to haul when not in use. 268319

Works great, though I wish the metal tubing was a little thicker and the ends inserted a little further inside the hitch receiver. This product is a must if you have a short bed truck and have any intention of carrying lumber or anything else longer than 8 feet. I was able to carry 12 foot 6x6s home without any issue. 627850

Delivery was fast and the product is as expected. This is great for my short bed truck with a hard cover. I carry a large tool box in the bed and other materials; I can use this to pick up lumber without have to empty the bed. For really long pieces, I can use it in conjunction with the roof luggage carrier. I can use bed high or hard cover high. Excellent product. 242634

I use this receiver hitch rack on my 2011 Toyota RAV4. It fits perfectly, even with the external spare tire. The rack is ideal for carrying a canoe or lumber on the car since it spreads the distance between the front luggage rack on the car and the rear rack, which is the receiver hitch mounted rack. The distance between the front and rear luggage racks on the car is just 3'. Having this rack in place makes the distance 7', which is perfect for most applications. Having the T-bar on the back makes loading a 70-pound canoe by myself simple. I went ahead and purchased the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch along with this rack. With the Quiet Hitch installed and with the securing straps attached, there is very little rack movement. I only wish there wasn't so much wobble without those items, but every rack is like that. The benefit of the Quiet Hitch, by the way, is that it also virtually locks your rack onto the car. I had no problem with bottoming out on a road full of potholes. I'd buy this rack again, and doing business with etrailer is painless. 588058

I love this load extender. I've used it a number of times to haul longer material and the results have been excellent. A few months ago, I picked up some longer material from a lumber mill, and the owner aw it while we were loading and wanted to know where he could get one. I gave him ETrailer's email address and told him to check it out. I highly recommend this extender 558637

After a year I dont use it as often we bought a longer utility trailer but when Im just picking up small amounts of longer material, its quicker than hooking up a trailer and easy to use. It stows away easily in my shop when Im not using it. Still love the product.

  • Carrying Kayaks With 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL 2 door Soft Top
I can help you find a kayak carrier with load assist for your 2018 Jeep JL Wrangler. The Darby Extend-A-Truck part # DTA944 comes as a quantity of 1 but 2 can be purchased, one for a front hitch receiver and one for a rear hitch receiver like the photo you mentioned. The first Darby extender would pin into a front mount receiver on the front of the Jeep and the second Darby extender would pin into the rear hitch receiver. You could then put your kayak on top of the extenders and tie...

Canoes typically weigh less than 100 lbs, and the roof portion of the truck would only be bearing 1/2 the weight of the canoe. Your roof should handle it with no problem whatsoever.
