Hi Kristian, great question! The etrailer Anti-Rattle Hitch Collar, part # e55YV, works by taking the slack out between your hitch receiver and the shank of your ball mount or hitch-mounted accessory. It clamps around the outside lip of your 2-1/2 inch receiver, then as you tighten the handle, an internal wedge presses firmly against the shank. That pressure eliminates the side-to-side and up-and-down movement that causes all the clunking and rattling you hear while driving.
One thing I really like about this design is that it doesn't rely on bulky U-bolts or extra shims. It has a clean, low-profile look and is quick to tighten or loosen when you want to swap accessories. It also includes a magnetic 2 inch sleeve adapter, so if you're using a 2 inch ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier in your 2-1/2 inch receiver, the adapter stays securely in place and helps reduce movement as well. The result is a much more solid connection that feels tighter and quieter on the road.
