Features to know about

Built for Confident, Heavy-Duty Towing: 16,000 lbs GTW and 4,000 lbs Vertical Load Limit

This hitch is rated for 16,000 lbs gross towing weight and a 4,000 lbs vertical load limit, giving it the strength and stability needed for serious fifth-wheel hauling. The sturdy steel construction and durable carbide powder coat finish hold up under heavy use while keeping the hitch looking sharp. It’s built to stay solid mile after mile so you can focus on the drive instead of what’s happening behind you.

Quiet, Secure Connection Every Time: Interlocking 2-Jaw System with 360-Degree Contact

The interlocking two-piece jaw design wraps completely around the king pin, creating full 360-degree contact for a tight, rattle-free connection. This design cuts down on noise and movement that slide-bar models often allow. With the jaws locked in place, hookup feels smooth and towing feels stable, giving you a quieter ride and more confidence on the road.

Close-up of Curt A16 fifth-wheel hitch showing the rounded, interlocking dual-jaw design for secure king pin connection and reduced trailer movement.

Easier Hookups You Can See: Three-Point Color Indicator and Lockable Handle

No guessing if you’re hitched right—just check the color-coded lock indicator. Red means uncoupled, yellow means ready to couple, and green means ready to tow. The handle locks for security with a padlock (sold separately) and automatically resets after you uncouple. Being able to see the indicator from the cab makes it simple to confirm your hitch status before rolling out.

More Turning Room When You Need It: S20 Non-Binding Slider with 12" Travel

The built-in S20 slider gives you 12 inches of front-to-back travel to create extra clearance during slow-speed turns. It slides smoothly without binding so the trailer can move away from the cab when maneuvering in tight spaces or backing into a site. Once straightened out, it automatically latches back in either direction so you only have to step out once.

Quick Breakdown for Easier Removal: One-Pin Head Release and Built-In Lube Plate

When it’s time to clear your bed, this hitch makes it straightforward. The head lifts off easily with one pin so one person can manage removal without extra tools. Built-in zerk fittings keep everything lubricated, and the included plastic lube plate helps the king pin glide smoothly into place during hookup. It’s a practical setup that’s simple to maintain between trips.

Video Transcript for An In-Depth Look at the Replacement Head Unit for Curt A16 and Q16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches

Hi everyone, Aidan here with etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at this replacement fifth wheel head for your A16 or your Q16 fifth wheel hitches from Curt. So if you're getting this as a replacement head it's gonna function just like your old one. You can see right away It's got the same torsion system that's acting as a sort of cushioning system. When we're hooked up to our trailer it's gonna help us create a smoother ride going down the road with that side to side, front to back and even on the diagonal movement, all absorbing that shock but also helping us with the hookup process by moving and meeting the kingpin as we're guiding it back. The dual jaw system here, they overlap with each other to create really solid contact on the kingpin 360 degrees around.

And if we move over to the side here those jaws can be controlled by the handle secured in place by a pin and clip that can be swapped out for a padlock if you want that security aspect, pulling the handle out and back, we'll open up those jaws or in the coupling mode I've got a dummy king pin here that will slide back in. The open flare here will guide it into position and then as it backs up, we're hooking up to our trailer. The handle will snap back into place fully locked in and we can just resecure it with our pin and clip. Now a good way to know if we're fully coupled is the indicator on the back. You can see it's green right now which means we're positively coupled and good to go.

But if I undo that handle here, partially you'll see it switched to that red and in the fully open position it'll switch to yellow letting us know we're ready to back up to our trailer. And then as we back up that kingpin slides in, it'll swing past that red and when it's fully latched in, go back to green. With the positioning of this, it's easy to see from the cab of the truck so you don't have to get out to check on it. You can just look back there and see if you've got a good couple. With the fifth wheel head here we are gonna have a weight capacity.

It can handle 16,000 pounds of gross trailer weight rating. That's how much weight it can pull and has a vertical load limit, that downward pressure of 4,000 pounds. Be sure to check whether it be the leg kit, the slider base or your truck and go by the lowest rating component in the system but know that that's what the fifth wheel head can handle. You've got your three different points of height adjustment on the side. Again, depending on whether you're using the slider base like we are today or the just regular legs that are fixed, that height may change but you do have three different options for the adjustment.

What I can tell you though is that the whole spacing is 2" apart for each interval of that height adjustment. So just take that into account whenever you're setting this up for your truck and trailer combination. The whole fifth wheel head is gonna be a steel construction with a carbide black powder coat finish over top of it to help it resist rust and corrosion over time. Now with any sort of finished scratches and scuffs can be a danger to it because if you scratch away the finish it's way more susceptible to rust and corrosion over time. It does come included though with a lube plate which will sit between the head of the fifth wheel and your pin box with the kingpin right in the center here and reduce that metal on metal contact to make sure that the finish hopefully lasts a lot longer, keeping your whole fifth wheel looking like new. Speaking of keeping things operating like new you do have two zerk fittings on that dual jaw design here. So you can apply grease regularly to keep them operating smoothly. If you don't wanna leave this in your truck bed full-time and you want to take it out, it can be pretty heavy but you can separate the head into two pieces by taking out that first pin and clip and this large pin that runs through the center of the fifth wheel head. And that will allow us to actually separate the head from the body of the fifth wheel here. So it makes everything a lot lighter and easier to get in and out. And with it out you can see the rubber isolators that are located inside. That's part of the torsion system that we're talking about earlier. And what helps cushion the whole movement here and keep everything operating nice and smoothly as well as reducing noise. Being able to break it down really helps with the installation process because you can do it all on your own relatively easily. So let's go ahead and walk through that process with you now. Now since this is a replacement head you could be replacing it on a standard fifth wheel rather than this slider kit that we're doing this with in which case you'll be needing to use the hardware that came with your fifth wheel originally that bolt, lock washer and flat washer that threads into the legs on your A16 hitch. With that being said, if you are missing these, you will need to get new hardware because the hardware that comes with the replacement head is going to be that bolt and nut. Getting this installed, it might be a little easier to have a second set of hands, but if you can grab it by the center and get one of your bolts started just to help hold it in place on either end, that would be ideal and then we can get the nuts installed later after repeating this on both sides. Now at this point you wanna take your wrench and socket and actually start to tighten these down in all four corners and then we can torque it to the specifications found in our instructions. For the torque wrench, it's pretty easy to rent these out or borrow them but if you wanna get your own you can find those here at etrailer. Just make sure to find the proper torque spec and your instructions and repeat that for the other three bolts. With everything torqued down we can take the head unit and drop it down into place, securing it with the large pin going in through the back of the whole assembly and securing out front with our smaller pin and retaining clip. And that's really all there is to it for the installation process, it's gonna be a very basic easy to use replacement for your A16 or your Q16 fifth wheel hitches. Just deep in mind that if you're replacing one with the standard legs that you do have the appropriate hardware either reusing the old one or getting new hardware. And if you're gonna be dropping it in place in a situation like this with the S20 slider, know that the hardware it comes with is gonna be exactly what you need. But that'll do it for our look at this replacement fifth wheel head for your A16 or your Q16 hitches from Curt. Thanks for watching.

Product was as described. Fit and price were great. Just wish shipping would treat the package as their own. First couple pictures are from damage due to shipper carelessness.

2017 Dodge Ram Pickup
Installed on a 2017 Ram 1500 Sport Quad cab for pulling my small fifth wheel camper. Installation instructions were straightforward for a first time installer. Everything came in the package that was required. Installation was somewhat challenging. Removal of the fuel tank was required to gain enough access on one of the attachment points. Not a huge deal, but working on the ground it was not ideal. The biggest thing to note is that you WILL have to cut out parts of the bed sill to install three of the forward bolts and hardware. Unfortunately there is no way around this due to dimensional requirements for placement of the rails. A small grinder or cutting torch is required to complete the job. Again, completing the install on a lift is highly preferred, but I did mine by jacking up the rear of the truck and working underneath. Once installed, it is very secure and I've had absolutely no problems with it. It's a nice clean look and should last for the rest of the use of the truck. If you are a decent backyard mechanic and can follow instructions (both on paper and YouTube/videos) you should be able to accomplish this.

This works great once installed, however I will warn anyone with a Ram with air springs, this will not work without modification, and definitely not a bolt on solution. This took close to 6 hours to install (instructions say 90 min), mainly due do the front brackets having to be mounted right where the air spring sensors are mounted. This required us to have to weld the brackets to the frame and widen the holes in the brackets to be able to mount the sensors in the same place. I would recommend a different product if you have air springs.

The instructions, while not the best, were still pretty straight forward but make sure you closely follow where to put the holes in the truck bed, which can only be seen in the diagram.

2012 Dodge Ram Pickup
I have no mechanical ability, and I have never seen or used a 5th wheel hitch until a week ago when I impulsively bought my wife a 5th wheel camper for her birthday. I had no idea what I needed to make things work. After a little research on the website I learned that this semi custom kit was exactly what I needed (rails and frame mounting brackets) and that it would fit my truck perfectly. The parts arrived at my house a lot quicker than I expected, and i was really nervous about starting this job because i knew it involved drilling holes in my truck bed and in the frame of my truck. I started the install with my 12 year old daughter, and we managed to get the entire job done in about 6 hours. We actually found a YouTube video that walked us through the entire install with no problems. We did the entire job with nothing but a few common tools (wrenches, tape measure, screwdriver) and a battery powered drill. If you need an inexpensive and easy to install system to haul a 5th wheel with a 1/2 Ram pickup, then this is for you!!!

I have a 2018 Ram 1500. Everything worked and fit as should. Holes and Bracket mounts all lined up. Directions were clear on where to drill holes in bed and bed rails. Install took about 6 hours. Had to remove rear tires, wheel well shield and spare tire to access everything. Also there is some notching involved to get at some bolts. I would recommend this product.

I had no pro lem wifh my hitch
Ot went
on well. Had to put on extension to the hitch because my bed was to short
by:
Needed the 41/2" bolts and space described, however not included in Kit. According to CM manufacturing it is not part of the bolt kit for my truck?? but was needed to fasten throught the bed support frame.
Mike from E-Trailer was very helpfull, but the manufacturer needs to review their product.

Great product. Installation time is misleading on the paper but would recommend if you have the proper tools and time. Had to remove gas tank which was the hardest part of the installation. The quality of the product is great and will buy again when needed in the future

My previous hitch was a B&W Patriot which I loved. I had to change hitches due to a new truck and decided on this Curt A16. I miss my old hitch. You are supposed to be able to remove the head from the base to make it easier to move in and out of the bed. But there is defect in manufacturing. There are two rubber collars that are designed to reduce vibration when towing. But the tollerance on thos collars is so tight that I can not remove the head without using a small bottle jack underneath of it to force it up and out of the base. The collars are slightly too wide and therefore the head is "jammed" into the base. I am currently in talks with Curt to find a solution.

  • Recommended 5th-Wheel Hitch that is Easily Removed on 2014 Ram 1500
Choosing the right 5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch for your 2014 Ram 1500 will depend first on the weight of the trailer you plan on towing. You will want to make sure the truck and hitch have weight capacities that exceed the trailer's loaded weight. Since your Ram 1500 has a short 5-1/2 foot bed, the safest way to tow a trailer is to use a stationary 5th-wheel hitch and replace the pin box on the trailer with a Sidewinder, if it does not have one already. The Sidewinder will be required to add...

  • What is Towing Capacity of 2010 Dodge Ram 4.7 Liter with Tow Package
Looks like your 2010 Ram 1500 with a 4.7 liter V8 would have a towing capacity of 7,650 lbs if you have a 2 wheel drive truck or 7,450 lbs if you have a 4 wheel drive truck. Those two figures would be the absolute max trailer weight you could tow with your truck. The Curt universal slider hitch and rail kit part C16616 won't work for you though as the rail kit does not fit your truck. Instead you'd need the semi-custom rail kit part # C16306-204 which fits your truck and then the E16 slider...

  • Can a 2011 Dodge 1500 Crew Cab Short Bed Tow a Fifth Wheel
Due to the short bed on your 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 Crew Cab, the only way you will be able to successfully tow a fifth wheel trailer without having the front of the trailer loft strike the rear of the cab during turns would be to use a Sidewinder extended pin box. The Sidewinder relocates the pivot point from the connection of the hitch and the king pin to the point where the pin box connects to the trailer, thus providing 22 inches of additional clearance between the rear of the cab and...

The towing capacity of a 2016 Ram 1500 Big Horn (Crew Cab, 5' 7" Bed, 5.7 Engine, A8 Transmission) is 8,010 lbs if you have the 3.21 axle ratio or 10,160 lbs if you have the 3.92 axle ratio. The axle ratio can be found listed on the sticker inside your passenger glove box most likely. The type of trailer does not matter so long as the loaded weight is below the above figure. • Where Does Curt Fifth Wheel Rail Kit # C16306-204 Install in 2017 Ram 1500 Short Bed
When installing the Curt fifth wheel rail kit part # C16306-204 in your 2017 Ram 1500 with a short bed you'll want the rear rail edge to measure 29 inches from the rear edge of the truck's bed. Once you have that rail placed you'll then use the fifth wheel hitch to place the front rail. Basically you locate the rear rail where it needs to go and then set a fifth wheel hitch in the rear rail and then use the mounting tabs of the hitch to place the front rail. • Why is Curt Fifth Wheel Rail kit C16306-204 for 2015 Dodge Ram 1500 Considered a Semi-Custom Kit
Semi-custom rail kits like the part # C16306-204 that you referenced mean that they will require frame drilling basically like a universal kit. However, since your 2015 Ram 1500 with a short bed isn't compatible with the standard L-bracket fifth wheel rail universal brackets custom brackets needed to be made. So it's semi-custom because the brackets are designed specifically to fit your truck, but they would require you to drill into the frame to install so it's actually going to install...

If your Ram is a 2500 or 3500 series, the # C16420-204 is the correct install kit. For a 1500 series, you would need the # C16306-204. Installation instructions are indeed included with the install kit, and the instructions do feature dimensions for where the bed rails are placed and exactly where holes are drilled through the bed to connect the frame brackets and bed rails. • Recommended Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch for a 2019 Nissan Titan w/ Factory Prep Package
Hey Kevin! Curt doesn't make a sliding hitch with a base that attaches directly to your Nissan's gooseneck puck system so you'll need to start with the Demco 5th Wheel Rail Adapter for Nissan Titan XD OEM 5th Wheel Towing Prep Package item # DM6200. This drops down into your gooseneck puck and gives a standard base rail set up. Then you can add any 5th wheel hitch that is compatible with industry standard rails. I looked up your truck's towing capacity and I think the best Curt hitch for...

So for example, the outstanding Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ S20 Slider # C23DR has a height of 17-1/2 - 21-1/2 inches, and that height is taken from the top of the base rails to the top of the 5th wheel hitch.
