Hello, everybody. this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at the CURT Custom Fit Fifth Wheel Installation Kit with the Carbide Black Base Rails for Chevrolet and GMC trucks. Now, this is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 2007 to 2019 Chevrolet Silverado, and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks with either the six and a half foot bed or the eight foot bed. Now, on a custom fit part like this, I always like to recommend for you to go to our website, use the fit guide, put in your year and model of vehicle, and it'll show if this will work for application.
Now, this kit is a complete installation kit. It allows you install a fifth wheel to your truck bed. And the kit will include everything shown here on the table. It includes these custom fit side mounting brackets here. The base rails comes with all the hardware you need for installation.
Even comes with some detailed instructions that'll describe how it all goes together, and they even include a brake line bracket. Now, the custom fit brackets, I wanna zoom in on those on the side here. These are a custom fit bracket, which are designed to mount beneath your truck bed. They provide these attachment points for the fifth wheel rails to attach to. They have a nice black powder coat finish to them to resist corrosion.
And what's nice about these brackets is they'll provide a custom fit by mounting to the existing holes in your vehicle's frame. You can see the holes drilled in these brackets. They'll line up with the holes on your frame, so it'll minimize the amount of drilling that's required. And in that case, it'll cut the installation time in half when compared with the universal bracket kits that are sold out there. Now, the base rails right here, these are what'll sit in your truck bed.
They allow the installation of your fifth wheel trailer hitch to them, and these rails will be visible in your truck bed. These rails here have a carbide black finish to them to match the color of your fifth wheel hitch. And these rails are industry standard rails, which means they're compatible with the BMW, the CURT, the Draw-Tite, the Reese, and even the Husky above bed fifth wheel trailer hitches. But that's gonna do it for the review on the CURT Custom Fit Fifth Wheel Installation Kit with the Carbide Black Base Rails for the Chevrolet and GMC trucks.
I installed these rails on my 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500. I saw a lot of people say they had to move the holes toward the front of the truck. I lined up the first rail by the instructions and I only drilled one 1/8" hole in the most forward hole on the drivers side to see how it lined up with the bracket thinking I might have to move the rail forward the hole would not be visible. Yes I had to move the rail 3/4" forward and everything lined up after that. My Curt sliding 16K 5th wheel drops in and out nice and easy. These rails are 45" in length and lighter than the Reese 48" rails that I am use to using. I highly recommend these rails if you need to keep the weight in the bed of your truck to a minimum.
Solid and well built. Installation instructions could have been a little better. I would purchase this again.
Good product but not a very easy install, I have a car hoist, which makes it easier, you need to take off both wheels . If you have arthritis for get it, send to a shop with flexible kids to install. No room to get torque wrench on rail bolts, tighten as best as you can and check them periodically, factory exhaust hanger welded on frame right were Ubolt should go but will work if installed to the rear of it.make sure to note that cab side rails use outside bolt holes and tailgate side rail uses second ones in from both sides.
Carriage bolts sent with kit did not work for me can only get open end wrench by frame had to get bolts so that the bolt can be tightened from up above. And only had to drill hole in frame for break hanger
Install was probably double the time it say, and that was with a lift and all legit snap on mechanics tools, instructions are kinda vague is some places and you have to use your best judgment but a good product regardless,
I like the rails and it was worth the money to get ones that the holes match up to my truck and I didn't have to make new holes. Thank you etrailer.
It fit the way it was supposed to fit and performs how it was intended. Great design! It could have have a few more instructions but we figured it out. Took two of us 3 hours to install.
Easy install, finish on the rails is rugged and hasn't scraped or chipped in my pickup bed.

After a year, the rails still look like new and the brackets against the frame still look new with the original coating. The bolts under the truck have some surface rust but I live in MN so that is expected. The bolts in the bed still have their zinc coating.

Poorly designed kit.
I've installed several rail kits over the years in other trucks and this is the worst one I've had to deal with. I watched their inline video and tried to follow their instructions. It is supposed to take between 1 and 2 hr. to install, try 5 with 2 people. The worst thing is the way it is attached to the the frame rails. They use U bolts around the frame and a 1/2" bolt in a current 1" oval hole. The only thing bearing the load of the hitch shifting from front to back is the holes drilled in the thin sheet metal of the box. Spot welding it to the frame or drilling an other hole is the only way I see to guaranty it doesn't shift. I should have bought the competitors universal kit.
