Features to know about

Built for Heavy-Duty Towing Confidence: 20,000 lbs GTW and 5,000 lbs Tongue Weight

This hitch is rated for 20,000 lbs gross towing weight and 5,000 lbs vertical load, giving it the strength and stability needed for hauling large fifth-wheel trailers. The solid steel construction and carbide powder coat finish make it tough enough to handle long trips with heavy loads. Once installed on the included above-bed rails, the hitch forms a strong, reliable connection that feels secure every time you tow.

Secure, Rattle-Free Connection: Interlocking 2-Jaw System

The interlocking two-piece jaw wraps completely around the king pin to deliver 360-degree contact. That tight fit cuts down on clanking and movement you get from slide-bar models, making the ride quieter and more controlled. With less rattle in the setup, you get a smoother towing experience and better confidence behind the wheel.

See Your Hitch Status at a Glance: Three-Point Color Indicator

The color-coded system shows exactly what position the jaws are in—red for uncoupled, yellow for ready to couple, and green for towing. You can check it from outside the cab before pulling away, so there’s no guesswork when it comes to confirming a full lock. The handle automatically resets after uncoupling, keeping the hitch ready for your next hookup.

Smooth Ride Over Rough Roads: Fully Articulating Torsion Head

The torsion head design lets the hitch move with your trailer through bumps and dips, reducing shock transfer and cutting down on towing noise. It keeps the trailer steady over uneven roads, so long drives feel smoother and less tiring. The built-in zerk fittings also make lubrication simple, keeping movement quiet and consistent over time.

Quick to Remove When You Need Bed Space: One-Pin Head Release

When it’s time to clear out your truck bed, the fast one-pin head removal design makes it easy for one person to lift off the top section without tools or extra help. The modular setup means you can take it apart in manageable pieces when not towing, saving space and making storage simpler between trips.

Video Transcript for Ultimate Overview of the Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch

Today we're going to take a look at the Curt A20 dual-jaw fifth wheel trailer hitch with a 20,000 pound weight capacity. Now, this fifth wheel hitch will mount in your truck bed so that you can tow your fifth wheel trailer. It uses the interlocking two-jaw system right here, which provides a nice 360-degree jaw-to-kingpin contact, and because of that it'll give you less rattle, more security than your slide bar models. Also, on the front of each jaw, over here and over here, you can notice there's two built-in grease zerk fittings, which will give you easy lubrication of the jaws. This hitch does use a fully articulating torsion head for controlled coupling and a nice stable, quiet ride. It will self-align for easy hookup, and helps suppress road shock to reduce any bothersome towing noise. The handle right here is a lockable handle.

It's a very short-throw single-handle operation. The nice thing about it, also, it does self-reset to the ready-to-couple position after uncoupling. Now, when you put this together, when you mount the crossmember to the legs, there's three rows of holes on the crossmember, so it actually will give you a four inch hitch height adjustment. The hitch height would be measured from your truck bed to the top of the hitch head, and you want that to be as close as possible, so when you're towing your fifth wheel with your tow vehicle, you want those level. It gives you three choices, anywhere from thirteen inches of hitch height adjustment up to seventeen inches. One of the nice features on this is the three-point indicator system. It'll tell you what position the jaws are in.

What's nice about it is that it's color-coded. Let me just swing this around so you can be able to see. If you notice, right under the hitch head, right here, you'll notice right now it's showing solid green. That means the jaws are completely closed. If we had a kingpin in there, the green would mean you're ready to tow.

This color coding will tell you if the hitch is ready to uncouple, couple, or tow. What's nice about those colors and looking, if you're in the cab, the cab would be right here, you can turn around as you're hooking up or uncoupling and watch the color, and when it changes, it tells you the position of the jaws. Basically, the green, like it is now, the jaws are locked closed; it's safe to tow. If it goes to yellow, let me just unhook this and pull out the handle. You can see right now, because I opened the jaws, it's showing yellow. Yellow means the jaws are ready to couple.

It's safe to back in the truck to couple up to your fifth wheel. It if would show red there, that means the jaws are locked open, and it's safe to pull your truck away. When it's red, you do not want to couple. Also, this has a nice fast one-pin head removal, makes it very easy for one person to remove the hitch. Back here, there's a clip you can pull out, and then you can pull this large pin out, and that'll allow you to take the head out of the crossmember so you can take it apart in pieces, which makes it easy for one person to remove the hitch. Also included with this . Let me roll this around here. There we go. Included with this, I have laid out, comes with the plastic loop plate right here. This plastic loop plate will go onto your kingpin and lets the kingpin glide smoothly into the hitch during hookup. Also comes with, you can see, the pins and clips for attaching the legs to your base rails. This is a simple installation with base rails and an installation kit. Now, the base rails and the installation kit we do sell separately on our website. I would recommend to go to our website, use our fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle, and it'll show you the correct base rails and installation kit for your application. This fifth wheel hitch is compatible with B and W, Curt, Demco, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese, and Valley above-bed base rails. This is a sturdy steel construction with a durable carbide powder-coat finish. Again, the specs on this. The gross towing weight capacity is 20,000 pounds. The vertical load limit or pin weight capacity is 5,000 pounds. We had mentioned the hitch height adjustment from thirteen inches to seventeen inches. What I'm going to do now is, we already have the jaws open, ready to couple, showing yellow, so what I want to do is here's an example. This is what a kingpin would look like on your fifth wheel. When you go to hook up, your kingpin would slide in between the two jaws, just like this, and once you get it far enough, your jaws will completely wrap around the kingpin. You notice the handle automatically slides up. The holes line up, so you just take your pin and clip, drop your pin into the hole, clip it, and that'll lock the handle. Now, the hole is large enough, you could actually put a padlock on there if you wanted extra security. It does come with this attached pin and clip. With the handle locked, you look back here at the color, it's showing green. That means you're all ready to tow. Again, to uncouple, you just pull your pin out, open it back out, and go, be able to back right out. That should do it for the review on the Curt A20 dual-jaw fifth wheel trailer hitch with the 20,000 pound weight capacity.

Very good hitch, I'm pleased with durability and ease of use. I didn't give it 5 stars because of the base locking pins that are slightly smaller than the holes they fit in and make the trailer "clunk" when taking off or stopping.

by: Daniel06/02/2021

Overall we are very happy with the hitch. We had a learning curve and it took a while for the product to sort of break in but it has worked well for us. The reason for 4 stars vs. 5 is: We were very unhappy with the way it was shipped. It was damaged but not so we could not use it. The packaging was destroyed and the product was dented and had to be painted due to all the scrapes. It arrived pretty beat up. Recently the safety pin chain broke and will have to be replaced. Braided cable might be a better option. The chain given was pretty weak for the abuse that it has to take.

Super hitch, went from Wisconsin to Yellowstone this summer and hitch performed great over all road conditions.

by: Rodney10/21/2019

Very nice product.....had some initial installation parts issues that etrailer quickly resolved....I've got 18K pounds on this hitch and all is well, including a few steep grade up and downs.....trailer rides nicely in hitch with virtually no chucking....hitch height just fits under the bed cover and I can remove the hitch
from the rails in two pieces by myself.... really satisfied....I'd recommend this product

by: Karl 06/25/2023

The hitch has been flawless.
To date
I have asked customer service to explain how I can separate the upper section from the lower section after pulling the connection pin with no definitive response. I have have very similar models in the passed and they have come apart with ease. Not this Curt though. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Still have not heard from your customer service on why it so difficult to separate the two sections of my hitch.

by: Ken 12/14/2024

Needed to replace an old hitch & got this. The design allows for easier connectivity and disconnect. Pulled our 38ft toy hauler without any issues and a 19ft camper as if it didn't exist. So far a great hitch!

by: Jeff10/16/2025

Overall the hitch seems to be good had a few scuffs and scratches but it is a fifth wheel hitch and nothing devastating couldn’t get the latch assembly out and I really didn’t want to start beating around on it. Talked to a friend who said that would get better after using it some. A little harder to deal with but fit the bed base plates perfectly in my 2022 F350 dually. Good to go get my toy hauler ??

Sorry to hear about the damage and difficulties, Jeff. The handle will get easier to actuate with use as they can be on the stiff side when new. I don't recommend beating it with anything as that will probably damage the mechanism. So don't do that. Are those B&W rails in your bed? And what do you carry in your toy hauler?

As good as new after a year and thousands of miles. Love it, well worth the price.

by: Donald06/21/2020

Seems like a good hitch, installed but haven't used it yet. The way the hitch is packaged is terrible. Even the bolt and bracket kit for the rails wasn't packaged very well. Heavy objects in a box flying around. Box was ripped open but luckily didn't lose any parts. Installed on a 2007 dodge 3500.

10,000 miles and a year later the hitch has been working fine.

by: Brad07/01/2025

Hitch is fine but packaging it shipped in was all torn up on arrival. To the point that handle was bent.

by: Robert03/12/2021

I bought a 2019 Ram truck and contacted Reese needing a tiedown kit for the 20,000 pound hitch I already owned as the tiedowns from my old Dodge truck was different. They told me I would have to buy a new hitch (around $2,000) as there was not a tiedown kit for the new style frame on my Ram truck.
I shopped around and got the same answer, finally talking to a etrailer associate, as I had found online a 20,000 lb Curt hitch for$850.00, I was ready to order but carried on the conversation informing him of my situation with the Reese hitch, he said let me check on something first. He came back with good news he could sell me a kit that would fit the rails he had and they would fit the Reese hitch I had. $xx.xx I was a little skeptical but he assured me the kit would work. It was a easy installation with the parts they furnished.
Upon installing the kit I found the rails from my Reese hitch would work with the kit, I contracted etrailer and they said they would issue a refund for the rails when I returned them, the refund was issued in a very short time.
etrailer is the first place I talk about when visiting with other trailer owners about parts needed. We owned 3 campgrounds in Minnesota I wish I had know about had known about etrailer at that time.

Couldnt be happier with this purchase. It really is perfect for our needs. 2019 F350 LWB pulling 45 5th wheel.

by: Ryan12/30/2023

Maybe need to work on the packaging part of the process. Not real sure if I have all the pieces to the product since the box was completely ripped apart. We order from etrailer all the time and it’s the same issue every time. The packaging process

by: Tyler08/03/2024

Install was easy and the hitch performs perfectly. I have ZERO complaints. Even a year later, it performs great.

by: Ron07/06/2025

Overall a great hitch. Couple of minor scratches. Like the easy disassembly to be able to install/remove from truck alone.

by: William05/06/2024

Love it. Easy to take apart and move! The instructions were very clear on how to assemble. I pull a 43ft camper and have yet to have any problems! Well worth the $$

by: Alejandro05/21/2022

Very nice piece!Arrived sooner than expected. I have the A16 version, that I used for a 10k Lbs 5th wheel and that handle very well but now I'll be towing a 16k tow hauler so I know this a20 will do just fine. And I love the locking jaw versions. I feel these are most secured in any type of towing.

by: Robert11/13/2021

Excellent hitch, took two of us 10 minutes, during a rain storm lol, to put together and install! As far as towing our Redwood 5th wheel it performed flawlessly, easy to hook up and the ride was super smooth and no noticeable bucking!

by: Jerry M.09/02/2025

The price was good. The instructions were fair (the diagram and instructions were misleading, and you couldn't tell where the actual bolt and bolt hole were placed). Delivery was good, Packaging was good, The design is flawed and almost impossible to do! It says about 90 minutes to install by someone experienced, 180 minutes for installation by someone that is mechanically inclined. 9 hours later I finished. There are a couple of bolts on the driver side that are almost impossible to install! I don't know what they were thinking. Trying to get a torque wrench anywhere near it? If they just extended the bracket an inch or 2 it would be a world of difference. I put this on a short bed, but I still think these bolts are not in a good place. I couldn't even get an open-end wrench on it!

by: James B.07/28/2017

I already had a curt goose neck frame mounted in truck so I used the Curt adopter plate # 16220 an the A 20 curt 5 wheel hitch assembly was very easy with no issues looking forward to putting it to work with my G M C 3500 also purchased a curt bumper dual ball adjustable hitch

by: Dave B09/19/2017

Hitch slid into existing rails after a very minor adjustment. Took my son and I about 25 minutes to assemble, torgue bolts and adjust rails in the bed of my truck. we have used it twice already and camper did not bang and pop like it did on old worn out receiver.
The ordering process was also very smooth. Kelsey took the time to explain the differences in the hitches before I made my decision!
I Would recommend both etrailer and this hitch if you are looking to change out!

by: Donald09/05/2020

Hitch came packed well even though the box looked banged up. Everything was still undamaged and in good usable condition, just minor scuffs. I think this unit will have more when I get done with it. Watched a you tube video from curt on installation and had little trouble installing the hitch following the enclosed guidelines. Everything lined up according to plan. I think the hardest part was getting access by the heat shield. Tough spot to work on but I had help from a younger, more adapt helper who was able to manage just fine. A creeper for underneath was super handy and a 6 foot ladder to climb in and out of the bed made it a whole lot easier. Really did not need to use a lift. Would have made it a bit harder to work in the bed. My truck is quite high which allowed nice working space underneath.

by: Daniel03/05/2026

From start to finish the experience was very enjoyable. The customer service team was amazing and everything happened just as promised.
The same hitch at my local trailer store cost much more.
Would definitely recommend etrailer to anyone.

I have towed with the Curt A20 for a few thousand miles. I really like this hitch. The visual hooked versus unkooked indicator is awesome. It operates flawlessly. I do get some chucking over bridge expansion joints. However, it seems like most people have this problem. On normal roads it pulls great.

The hitch will drop into the pucks and you will then turn and lock the handles in place to secure it but there is no other hardware required for this. The puck system is a set of five holes in the truck bed, four on the perimeter and one in the center which would be pretty apparent if...

  • Comparing Reese Fifth Wheel Hitch With Curt A16 Fifth Wheel Hitch on 2018 Ram 3500
The Curt A16 # C16120 and Reese # RP30047 are both quality fifth wheel hitches that have a 16,000 lb capacity and dual jaw system but there are a couple of noticeable differences. The Curt A16 has a fully articulating head while the Reese has a head which only pivots 4 ways. The A16 also has a handy indicator system which will let you know if the jaws on the hitch are ready to couple, uncouple or tow, which is a convenience feature the Reese hitch does not offer. The Curt A16 # C16120...

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch for 2014 Ram 3500 Long-bed to Tow 15.5K Trailer
You are starting off well by using a long-bed 1-ton pickup to pull your 5th wheel. This is the ideal type of truck for 5th wheels since long beds naturally provide good turning clearance and have the muscle to pull heavy trailers. But in terms of the hitch I do recommend using a higher-rated hitch that provides you with some safety margin. You could use a 16K hitch with a 15.5K trailer but you will certainly find you will get a longer working lifespan from a hitch rated for a higher weight. If...

Hey Derek, thanks for reaching out! The Curt Rota-Flex pin boxes, like part # LC176440 you referenced, aren't compatible with the Curt Q-Series hitches because the pin box hitch plate moves and the Q-Series hitches use a spherical axial bearing which provides a smooth ride quality for standard pin boxes, but will work against the movement of the Rota-Flex pin boxes. Hey Matt, that's frustrating to hear but my first question is what type of wedge are you using for the pin box and the A20? If it's a universal wedge that would be what I'd think the issue is. The custom fit wedge you'd need is the part # C16992. That should tighten up chucking quite a bit. Let me know what you have now for a wedge and we can go from there. Also if you see where the movement is that is causing the noise let me know.

Choosing the right 5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch for your 2014 Ram 1500 will depend first on the weight of the trailer you plan on towing. You will want to make sure the truck and hitch have weight capacities that exceed the trailer's loaded weight. Since your Ram 1500 has a short 5-1/2 foot bed, the safest way to tow a trailer is to use a stationary 5th-wheel hitch and replace the pin box on the trailer with a Sidewinder, if it does not have one already. • Is it Normal for Curt A20 Fifth Wheel Hitch to Make Noise Starting/Stopping
Hey Doug, what you are describing is pretty normal and is referred to as "chucking". Some hitches have a little looser tolerances in the jaw design that can cause this and/or some trailer king pins are a little worn out which allows for more play as well. The A20 doesn't have a reputation for being noisy so I wouldn't suspect it being the problem but there isn't any type of adjustment on it's jaws.
