Highest Speed Rating for a 4.80 x 12 Trailer Tire
Question:
i have a small 4x8 trailer with 4.8x12 tires and the axle rating is around 1200 lbs with a max speed of 55mph. I want a trailer for the interstate and was wondering if i put the same 5 lug pattern but a bigger rim and tire on the trailer if it would help going 70+mph. max load ill have on the trailer is around 700 lbs. Just not sure if i just got a better 12 inch tire if it would be better for interstate speeds or if the bigger rim and tire would help more.

The speed rating limitation for a trailer will come down to the tires, it has little to nothing to do with the axle, hub, or wheel size. That said, smaller tires generally do have lower speed ratings but you do not need to upgrade the wheels on your trailer in order to use a tire with a higher speed rating. I recommend the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire part # TT48012C which has radial plies that you will want for highway use and an 81 speed rating which should be plenty.
I like Taskmaster because they are a great middle of the road option that won't break the bank and they come with a two year warranty.
