Recommended Hitch and Wiring for 2014 Honda CR-V to Tow 700-lb Mower on Trailer

Question:

Hello, I have a honda crv 2014 FWD. I also have a Kubota zero turn mower 700LBS that I want to put on a trailer and tow 5 miles to my property. What hitch and wiring harness should I get? Is there a kit that includes both that would be able to handle this weight?

Your 2014 Honda CR-V can be fitted with either of three classes of hitch, but for reasons of more capacity and better compatibility I suggest a Class III hitch with a 2-inch receiver such as # 75742 from Draw-Tite. This hitch installs without drilling and includes all required hardware. Written instructions and an install video are linked for you.

The recommended ball mount for this hitch is part # 2753 but if this mount's 2-3/4-inch rise or 4-inch drop do not allow your trailer to remain level you can choose another one that does. The linked article on ball mounts explains how to determine this and a page to Class III ball mounts is included for you. You'll also need a hitch ball that matches the size of your trailer's coupler. For a 1-7/8-inch ball use # 19260 or for a 2-inch use # 63845. You will also need either a pin and clip # PC3 or a lock # 63232 to secure the ball mount.

For wiring you can use custom-fit harness # 118561 which is a plug-in install with no cutting or splicing required. An install video for this is also provided.

You'll want to make certain that the combined weight of the trailer and mower does not exceed the CR-V towing capacity listed in your owner's manual.
