Troubleshooting a Dutton Lainson Electric Winch that Won't Release

Question:
Sir,I have the Dutton-Lainson TW400 StrongArm Electric Winch - Marine - 4,000 lbs. Its about 5 years old. When I turn the release dial counter clockwise to release the strap it wont release. Tension is maintained on the strap. Any idea how I can disengage the mechanism so I can launch my little 14 aluminum boat?Anu assistance is greatly appreciated.Sincerely

I spoke with my contact at Dutton Lainson and he thought the most likely problem you are experiencing is that the clutch gear and 120 tooth gear are stuck together. He said that in high humidity situations where the winch hasn't been used in a while this problem can arise. You will need to remove the cover and there will be two gears right on release shaft that you will need to pry apart with a flat screw driver.
If that doesn't solve the problem the next most likely situation is that the thrust bearings could be wore out. For that you would need the Replacement Thrust Bearing kit part # DL6381.
