Is There a Trailer Hitch for a 2027 Chevy Bolt that Doesn't Require Cutting the Bumper?

Published 10/12/2026

Question:

Hi, I have a 2027 Chevy Bolt EV LT. Im looking to install a hitch to carry a 2-bike not e-bike rack, but all the models I see involve cutting out a section on the underside of the bumper. None of the hitches Ive used in the past have involved irreversible alterations, and the car is financed so I dont want to cause any issues with either that or warranty by cutting a piece of the car. I saw in a question about the 2023 Bolt that GM can be cagey about this stuff, how should I proceed?

Hi John,

I did some searching and there doesn't appear to be a trailer hitch in production that doesn't involve cutting the bumper, including the higher end hitches like Tork Lift EcoHitch. Because the hitch frame sits higher up to blend with the car's body lines and maximize ground clearance, the structural attachment point where the 2-inch receiver meets the hitch frame sits slightly higher than the bottom edge of the plastic fascia which is why it's required to cut the bumper for the receiver to fit through.

From what warranty info I could find, GM could deny a warranty claim for the bumper or the sensors in it if a hole is cut in it but that wouldn't affect a warranty claim on the suspension, brakes, etc. You can always call a GM dealership to verify that just in case.

Is there another vehicle that could have a trailer hitch installed on it if you choose not to put one on the Bolt?
