RVLG-8HDL Landing Gear Not Working After Shearing a Pin
Updated 10/13/2026 | Published 10/10/2026 >
Question:
The following landing gear is not working. When I looked at the connection, it appears that the pin connecting the jack to the cross bar had sheared off and the previous owner jerryrigged it somehow to work without the brass connecting pin. I bought the repair kit, and took the leg off, and discovered that the gears are fine, just the pin needs to be replaced. However, I could not get remove the small pin that attaches the gear to the jack to disassemble it. It will not budge no matter what. Also, that is when I discovered another problem. The gears wont turn. It seems that the jack is stuck inside the shaft lower down. It will only turn about an eighth of a turn and then wont go any further either way. What could be causing this, and how do I fix it. Also, how do i remove the small pin on the gear itself?

Hey, from what you're describing, I suspect the original connecting pin sheared because something was binding inside the landing gear leg. Since the gears look fine but the shaft only turns about 1/8 of a revolution in either direction, there's a good chance the internal screw mechanism is seized, bent, or damaged. Even with a new pin installed, that binding is still going to be a problem.
As for removing the small pin holding the gear to the shaft, it's a roll pin that needs to be driven out with a properly sized roll-pin punch and hammer. A little penetrating oil can help if it's stuck, but be careful not to damage the shaft while removing it.
Honestly though, since you're already dealing with a sheared pin and an internal mechanism that won't turn freely, your best bet here will be replacing the whole landing gear leg.
What rig are you servicing?

I have a 2003 Keystone Everest. I figured it might be something with the screw mechanism inside the shaft, but there is no way to get to that or even see it without removing the gears up top. And, I haven'b been able to get the roll pin to budge yet. The cost to replace both legs (not including the motor) is $272 and includes the cross bar. I was hoping that I could just replace just that following leg, and not both. Is that possible? Also, what is the difference between the two 8,000 lb. jacks, and am I looking at the right one?
