Will 1,000-lb Blue Ox SwayPro Spring Bars Work With My New Travel Trailer? How do I Know?

Question:

I have a Blue Ox BXW 1500 Sway Pro hitch set for my current travel trailer. I am downsizing our travel trailer and would like guidance on whether my current spring bars will work with the new trailer, or if I need to downsize the spring bars for the new trailer. The new trailer lists Hitch Weight as 560 lbs UVW as 5,124 lbs, GVWR as 6,740 lbs and CCC as 1,616 lbs. The new trailer has front storage so there will be more weight added in the storage compartment. No more than 100-200 lbs. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks, Ed

You were right on the money with the Replacement Spring Bars for Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System # BXW4007. I would definitely step down from your current 1,500-lb bars for the new trailer.

Your trailer has a 560-lb dry hitch weight, but once you load it for camping and add that 100 to 200 lbs of gear in the front storage, I would expect your loaded tongue weight to be somewhere around 700 to 900 lbs. The # BXW4007 bars are rated for up to 1,000 lbs of tongue weight, putting them right where you want to be. Your 1,500-lb bars would be too stiff for that lighter tongue weight and can give you a rougher ride.

Just remember that your actual tongue weight once loaded is what matters, along with any cargo carried behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. I would confirm your loaded tongue weight once you have the new trailer packed the way you normally travel, but based on the numbers you provided, the # BXW4007 1,000-lb bars are the ones I would go with.

Where are you planning to take the new camper on its first trip?

I believe the BXW4007 will be the correct bars but they won't work on my 5 yr old Blue Ox hitch. My bars have a ramp on the end that slides in the hitch which pushes up the permanent installed spring latch. The latch then snaps back down into the hole on the top of the bar to lock it in. The BXW4007 on your site uses a different latching system, external slide pin, to lock into the hitch. My blue ox hitch does not have side holes to slide the new style pin into. Are the original style bar that my hitch uses still available, and if so, do they have a different part number to order them? We will be going on a 400 mile round trip this weekend to a family reunion. We will be using the 1500 lb bars I have, which I know are too stiff just from bringing the trailer home from the dealer. But, I will be using a lower link count in hopes it won't be too stiff. But I think I will lose sway control which is why I need new bars. Thanks, E

@EdmondV Oh, you have the older model! That explains it. Your SwayPro uses the older spring-loaded latch built into the head, while the new # BXW4007 bars use the newer pin-style attachment. It sure would be nice if they renamed these after making such a big design change! To update your system, you will need the Replacement Standard Hitch Head and Hardware for Blue Ox SwayPro # BLU29ER along with the 1,000-lb Spring Bars # BXW4007. The new head will allow you to use the current-style bars. I am glad you caught that before ordering just the bars!

@EdmondV I can attest that the correct size bar ( within a margin ) is best ! My dealer gave me a 2000 pound bar for a MAX 1000 lb hitch weight . After chasing a feeling that something was wrong for sometime including a purchase of a new truck ! I found out my bars were oversized and ordered from E-Trailer the correct size bar . And BOOM ! My towing experience was where I thought it should have been ! I might not have needed a truck change after all …… but that’s another story ??
