How Thick Is Hook of Buyers Products 3/8" x 42" Class 4 Trailer Safety Chain 337BSC3842

Updated 08/29/2026 | Published 08/18/2026

Question:

How thick is the hook? I am planning on using bow shackles on my hitch. The safety change hooks will connect to the bow shackles. I need to ensure the bow shackle is wide enough at the bolt pass-through to accommodate the thickness of the hook.

Hey Rick, the thickness of the hook of the Buyers Products 3/8" x 42" Class 4 Trailer Safety Chain with 1 Clevis Hook # 337BSC3842 is 2 inches. Would that work for you?

It can't be 2 inches thick. It should be something like 1/2 inch or 3/8 of an inch. It may be 2 inches long. Can someone please take another attempt and let me me know.

@Rick when you say thick do you mean if the hook was laying on its side on the ground and you measured from the ground up? Or same scenario but measuring left to right thickness?

@JamesonC: Yes to your first example if the clip we're on the ground and you measured up. Using a bow Shackle the slip hook will rest on the pin of the shackle. I'm just trying to ensure that my shackle has a wide enough gap for the slip hook to rest on the pin unhindered. Being a bow shackle, the pin will be what the slip hook rides/rests on going down the road.

Don't know why you need to slide the safety chain clevis slip hook thru the narrow part of a threaded shackle. These 3/8" slip hooks should have enough opening between the inner hook body and the safety catch for a 1/2" up to 3/4" shackle loop. I've put shackles on step bumper plate holes before and just latched the safety chain hooks to the rounded part on the shackles. Also, some safety chains had 7/16" chains and slip hooks and the smaller slip hooks wouldn't fit on factory hitches. Had to swap out with 3/8" slip hooks so the catches would work.
