Question:
Hello, I have been told by my dealer that, if I dont use the factory trailer wiring harness for my 2026 Subaru outback Touring, that it will mess up the electronics in the vehicle. The plug in the car does not match the aftermarket harness plugs. I guess that the harness would have to be hard wired? I hesitate to pay $650 to have this done...especially since I have the skills and am well qualified to do the job myself. Thanks

Hey Michael congrats on the new Outback. The Curt Powered Tail Light Converter item # C59236 will indeed work on your 2026 Subaru Outback and not mess up the electrical system. Dealer's say that all the time and it's completely untrue, unless it's a European car.
We actually had someone install the Curt item # C59236 on a 2026 Subaru Outback. He was able to splice it directly into the wires leading to the factory tow plug you were talking about. He left an extremely detailed review that I have attached below along with the pictures he provided.
If you also need a hitch, I recommend our etrailer item # e25TR. This is a class III hitch with a 2" receiver that installs behind your Outback's rear bumper. I like it over the Curt item # C67JR because the matte finish blends in better beneath the rear trim.
What do you plan on towing or are you adding lights to an accessory like a bike rack? Feel free to answer this and throw in any other questions you have, where it says Add Comment.
