Recommended 7-Way Connector and Brake Controller for a 2009 VW Touareg TDI

Updated 07/14/2026 | Published 07/11/2026

Question:

Re 2009 VW TouaregTDI v6 3.0. Hoping you can assist with a shopping list for my vehicle. This vehicle does not have a factory tow package. It has an aftermarket class 3 hitch. I had the 4 pin plug replaced with a 7 pin - but the installation was not totally correct as either the brake lights or indicators were not working- i have not towed for several years . I am looking to purchase a travel trailer and want to endure everything is setup correctly. So can you recommend all the correct wiring harnesses etc and a brake controller for this vehicle . Will appreciate your assistance. Thanks

I sure Gary, and thanks for the information! To add a 7-Way wiring harness and brake controller to your 2009 VW Touareg TDI, I recommend the following parts:

4-Way Wiring Harness - Curt Powered Tail Light Converter item # C59236

7-Way Wiring Harness - Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller item # ETBC7.

Brake Controller w/ Universal Harness - Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty item # RED52VR

I attached a couple of wiring diagrams below so you can see how to get the 7-Way and brake controller installed. The 4-Way connector will need to be spliced directly into the factory wiring harness going to the tail lights on your VW.

What kind of travel trailer are you looking at getting?

I installed the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty item # RED52VR on a 2023 Chevy Colorado. Installation was straight forward and the controller is great to work with. It is very accurate on the control of break pressure. By past experience, I have learned that one of the most important connections is the ground! Tim F
