Question:

Afternoon, I have a trailer i got fomr my grandparents which was custom built in 1997. I am wanting to service everything on it. The tube diameter is just above 2-3/4, it uses a 4 bolt electric brake mount, has a 5 bolt pattern for the lug boltsnot nuts and the outer bearing is a LM67048. Everything i find is between a 4,400 and 6,000Lb axle. The tube diameter throws me for the biggest loop since they are usually either 2-3/8 or 3 for this style. Your guidance would be appreciated

Hey Chad. There's few hubs that use a item # LM67048 outer bearing and they don't have a 5 lug bolt pattern. The Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly item # 8-407-5UC3-EZ would be one of them and it has a 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern. There's not many brake assemblies with a 4-bolt flange that fits this hub.

Custom built trailer's have a history of using mobile home axles. They were readily available back in the day and there were plenty around because they only got used once to move the mobile home to it's destination.

Instead of trying to find parts for it, I recommend replacing the axle and installing new hubs and brakes. Depending on what size axle you have we may have one that comes with hubs and brakes like item # e43SR.

What you'll need to do is take a measurement of the hub face and spring seat distances. I attached a diagram below that shows this measurements.

Another thing I recommend doing is measuring your bolt pattern. If you go back to the '90s the common now 5 on 4-1/2 lug pattern wasn't always used. There's also 5 on 4-3/4, 5 on 5, and 5 on 5-1/2 patterns. I linked an article below that'll show you how to measure yours.

Hey Jerred, This is a custom built triple axle tilt deck trailer built by my grandparents in 97. It has 2 electric brake axles and 1 idler axle. I did get some more information from taking one of the hubs off. The grease seal is a 442270, inner bearing is a 25580, outer bearing is the LM67048. The hubs appear to be 5 on 5.25(weird size I even use verniers to verify). Center spring to center spring is 82" from center spring to center hub is 7.5"

@ChadB Yeah we're definitely not going to have a hub with a 5 on 5.25 bolt pattern. The Hub and Drum Assembly item # 8-201-5 will fit with a inner bearing item # 25580 and outer bearing item # LM67048. The item # GS-2250DL grease seal would work as a replacement for your 442270. The Idler Hub Assembly item # 8-213-5UC1 will fit the non-braking axle. You would need to purchase additional item # GS-2250DL grease seals because the ones included are too small for your spindle. I actually found some brake assemblies for older axles that may work. They're the Dexter Electric Brake Assembly item # 23-105-09 left hand and item # 23-106-09 right hand. These fit a 4 bolt brake flange that measures 3-1/4" horizontally for the top two holes, 2-1/2" horizontally for the lower two holes and the vertical distance for both is 3-3/8". We don't have an axle that matches those dimensions.

We had a single axle trailer that was for our search & recovery boat. We couldn't really match what was there because we were going to make it a dual axle trailer with electric brakes. We replaced the axles and hubs instead of trying to match what was there. Had to put new fenders on it as well. But now it works better as we added so much equipment to the boat the trailer was overloaded. Not sure if will help or not. Thanks David Pease, Chief The Reds Team

Thank you for all the information Jerred, i do appreciate it. I believe with everything here I'm going to go the custom 6000lb axle route as these have a weird spring spacing(81.75" Center to Center) and weird hub face at 95.75".

@ChadB You're welcome! I think that's a good decision and a pretty common solution to the problems you're running into. That's a really wide axle. You can move the spring seats pretty easily but you can't grow an axle!
