Hello, I bought a yakima ridgeback 2 from an elderly couple. the rack has not even been used. i have a subaru with a 1 1/4inch hitch. the hitch pin from yakima does not even go all the way through the receiver. any help would be

Hey Brian, thanks for reaching out. The Yakima RidgeBack 2 # Y02457 uses a proprietary hitch pin that attaches to only one side of the receiver. It isn't designed to go all the way thru the shank and receiver. I've included a picture of what that looks like.

Basically, you insert the hitch pin, then tighten the speed knob then you are good to go. The pin doesn't need to go all the way thru.

Does your rack look like the one in the pictures I included?

@BrianP Yea I understand where you are coming from. It is a bit of a different design, but I can assure you that if the pin is fully inserted as far as it will go, and the speed knob is fully tightened, it is just as secure as any other hitch pin setup. Yakima thoroughly tests all this stuff. No need to worry. I had a Yakima rack that used this same style of hitch pin and it worked great for me for several years without any issues. The only reason I got rid of it is because someone rear ended me and the rack got damaged. The hitch pin held up great though lol
