Replacement Brake Assembly for a Dexter 023-459-00

Updated 06/20/2026 | Published 06/18/2026

Question:

I have a 2020 keystone cougar 29mbs 5th wheel. The brakes are dexter 023-459-00. I havent own the trailer but a couple years. I was repacking the wheel bearings and noticed more play in the magnetic arm than the other axle. I discovered the top of the arm is missing the square that sits between the shoes. Looks like a manufacturer defect? Is this safe to operate? Im going to include a photo. Hope you understand what Im talking about. Thanks, Harold

Hey Harold, thanks for the picture. I'm not seeing anything vital that's missing from your brake assembly. What you'll want to do to make sure they're functioning correctly is reassemble your hub and put the wheel back on. Then have a buddy engage the manual override on your brake controller and see if you can spin that wheel and compare the resistance you get to one of your other brake assemblies. You can adjust the gain settings up and down to see if that assembly has failed.

If you need to replace it, the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Assembly item # 23-459 is the correct one. We also have the left hand side item # 23-458. These are the newer ones with two springs instead of just one large one. They're still 6,000 lbs capacity and fit a 5 bolt brake flange.

Have you noticed any braking changes you've had to compensate for on your last few trips out and is the ply isolated to that one brake assembly?

You can add this information, along with any other questions you have, where it says Add Comment.
