Great Job etrailer.com!!!!!! It is so refreshing to deal with a company that is concerned about customer service. Not only did I get an excellent product with great customer service, the product was MADE IN USA!!!!!!! I would highly recommend etrailer.com

by:

Great product, we hope this helps to keep our trailers on the road more and less time in the shop.

Great service from etrailer, very fast shipping!

by:

Easy installation. If one can remove five nuts/assembley and disconnect/reconnect two wires anyone can install these.

by:

The brakes arrived in good time, I have them installed, they arrived in good condition and were the exact item I ordered. I will look to you for additional items I need for my trailers.

by:

The brakes fit perfectly. Have not tried them yet, but they appear to be of good quality. I really want to comment on how great the service has been through the ordering process. The parts arrived even quicker than I had been told they would. When I called for technical assistance while installing them (for torque numbers), I was immediately connected to someone who could answer my questions. This is the second time I have ordered from them, and will not hesitate to do so again.

by:

EASY INSTALL COMPARED TO REBUILDING EXISTING BRAKES, ALSO SELF ADJUST WILL SAVE ME SOME MAINTENANCE TIME SINCE WE PUT ON UP TO 8K MILES A YEAR WHICH NORMALLY REQUIRES SEVERAL AJUSTMENTS OF OLD BRAKES TO KEEP THEM WORKING UP TO PAR

by:

These new brakes worked perfect with my 6k axles. I will be placing another order soon for the dust caps. Thanks for a quality product at a reasonable price.

by:

I got this to replace the brakes on my horse trailer and they worked great!! Easy to install after taking the hubs off just remove 5 nuts bolt new assembly on. That easy. This is the 2nd set I have gotten I did a friends horse trailer last year and they love it. Thanks Etrailer!!!!!

by:

I ordered a set of four for my tandem axle trailer on a Friday and they arrived on Wednesday. They were Incredibly easy to install! The bolts lined up perfectly, and from start to finish took about two hours, that included repacking the bearings. Best pat is the, MADE IN USA label I am very very pleased so far. I cant wait to try them out and see if the automatic adjustment works. Thanks etrailer!!

by:

This brake backing plate fits the ALKO axle on my Keystone trailer. Bolt holes align exactly. I ordered three more to replace all of the problematic OEM ALKO brakes which shuddered and squealed since new.

  • Initial Adjustment Of Nev-R-Adjust Electric Brakes
When you install Nev-R-Adjust drum brakes like Dexter part # 23-458 and part # 23-459 the initial setup will be different. The Nev-R-Adjust has a small lever that prevents the brake star wheel from backing off as you do when you adjust standard brakes. With the Nev-R-Adjust brakes, you simply turn the wheel backwards after everything is installed, until you get a slight drag. If you continue turning the wheel it would keep adjusting the brakes until it locks the wheel. You would then...

  • When Do Brakes Need to be Added to Both Axles of Tandem Axle Trailer
There really isn't a particular maximum trailer weight that is used to determine when brakes need to be added to both axles of a tandem axle setup. While I do still recommend checking your local laws, I am also not aware of any general laws that indicate when brakes need to be put on all axles of a multi axle trailer (only laws that state when a trailer needs to be equipped with them). With all of this in mind, we always recommend adding brakes to both axles of a tandem axle trailer....

  • Troubleshooting Weak Brakes on 2008 Everest After Having Bearings Repacked
Either they somehow got grease on your brakes and they aren't working because of that or the brakes are way out of adjustment. Are the brakes manual adjust or self -adjust? If they are self adjust they should start working again after a several brake applications while moving. If they are manual adjust you'd want to click the star wheel of the assemblies until you feel a light drag as you turn the wheel by hand. Either way though I'd recommend speaking with the shop you had work on the...

  • What Is The Difference Between the 6K and 7K Dexter Axle Electric Brake Assemblies
You are correct, the difference between the Electric Brake Assembly for 6K Axles, part # 23-458 / 23-459 and the Electric Brake Assembly for 7K axles, part # 23-180 / # 23-181, is that the 7K brake assembly has a stronger magnet, and also has a different compound on the brake shoes than the 6K electric brake assemblies for more stopping power. Both the 6k and 7K brake assemblies, fit the same axle. Yes, the 7K backing plates on part # 23-180 / 23-181, will fit on 6K pound axles.

  • Recommended Suspension Upgrade for Grand Design 17MKE Travel Trailer
Since your Grand Design 17MKE has a GVWR of 6,395 lbs, you more than likely have 3,500 lb axles. That being the case, the Roadmaster Comfort Ride Leaf Spring Suspension Kit # RM-2460-2560 will not fit your travel trailer. Although Roadmaster does not have a kit like this for 3,500 lb axles, I do have another option. I recommend the Roadmaster Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers for Tandem Axle Trailers # RM-2450 which are designed for 3,500 lb axles. Your trailer will need to have the leaf springs...

  • Which Axle of Tandem Axle Boat Trailer Should Have Brakes
This is a really great question but it depends on what the trailer will carry. For most applications you'd want the front axle of the tandem axle trailer to be the brake axle but if it's a boat trailer (particularly with an outboard motor) you'd want it to be the rear axle. Basically it comes down to which axle would be carry more of the trailer's weight.

  • Replacement Brake Assemblies for Replacing Dexter 023-357
The Dexter part number 023-357-00 is a 12x2 electric brake assembly. The correct RH assembly to use to replace what you have would be the part # 23-459 and for the LH assembly you would want the part # 23-458 if you have 6K axles. If you have 7k axles you would want part # 23-458 for the LH side and part # 23-465 for the RH side.

  • Why Wont My Electric Brakes Lock Up
When it comes to why your brakes are locking up after you added new wiring and grounds it sounds like there is still a loose wire or its not plugged in 100%. It could also be that you may wired your 7 round wiring incorrectly. I would recommend testing your vehicle and trailer plugs with Hook Probe Circuit Tester # PTW2993. You can also try to adjust and bed your brakes. This tester will check circuits from a distance, check polarity, and find electrical shorts. If you're still having...

Even thought this is stated to work for a 6K axle, it will work perfectly fine with your 5K axle. • Which is Best Brand of Trailer Brake Assemblies
Dexter brand trailer axle components are considered by most people to be the highest quality around. Whenever possible I recommend them over the other brands. For 12 inch diameter Dexter brake assemblies that are self-adjusting the Dexter kit part # 23-458 for the left hand side and part # 23-459 would be what I'd recommend.

  • Can Hydraulic Trailer Brake Drums be Used with Electric Brakes
Some drums can be used with hydraulic or electric brakes and others cannot. You would have to check with the drum manufacturer unless it specifically says on the drum somewhere. You mentioned a ridge which would indicate to me that you may not be able to use electric brakes with the hubs you have. The magnet does need a flat surface to attach to. This is called the armature surface. The less surface area there is on the armature surface the weaker the connection between the magnet and...

  • Recommended Axles For Travel Trailer With 68-1/4 Inch Spring Center To Spring Center Measurement
You do have some odd measurements. You can absolutely use the parts that you mentioned and drastically change all of your trailer connection points (Plan A), however, I recommend doing something much easier and cleaner. It won't require finding new connection points for your springs, building outer wells, or adding different springs. So consider this Plan B. • Should 7k Trailer Brake Assemblies be Used on a 6k Trailer Axle
Dimensionally they'll fit and they will operate but you don't actually get a stronger braking action. Instead the brakes will be harder to setup and get the correct amount of braking action. The heavier duty assemblies have a magnet that's more sensitive which helps with heavier weights but when used on a lighter trailer they become harder to setup and not anymore powerful. Best option is go to with 6k brake assemblies like the part # 23-459 for the right hand side and part # 23-458 for...

  • Trailer Brake Magnets Not Making Full Contact with Inside of Brake Drum
The brakes should still work fairly well. The magnets, when energized, cling to the armature surface of the drum and the rotations of the drum pull the magnet which then pushes out the shoes to make contact with the drum. If the brakes seem weak then you could adjust them out to be a little more aggressive to compensate for the little bit of the magnet not making contact with the drum. And if that still is not enough then you would need to replace the drums.

  • How To Determine The Correct Trailer Brake Assembly
Thank you for the picture it helps a lot when determining these parts! Reading the label tells me this is a Dexter D52 axle with a capacity of 5,100lbs, with that information I recommend using the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Assembly # 23-459 for the right side, and the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Assembly # 23-458 for the left side. For your bearings you'll want the Bearing Kit for Trailer Brakes with 12" Hub/Rotor # DBRKHW6EZ.

The drag you are referring to would be the shoes of the brake assembly on the drum with the brakes not being applied. You would not need to have the brakes activated to adjust them either. The star wheel on the back of the assemblies can easily be adjusted with a # W80630 or with a small screw driver. Check out the video (see link). The actuating arm that is attached to the brake magnet should be pointing towards the front of the trailer like in the picture I have included.

Since the Dexter 12” self-adjusting brakes part # 23-459 and part # 23-458 are brand new and the braking is weak there is a chance the brakes are not fully adjusted yet. The brake assemblies haven't been activated enough times for them to find the right setting.
