Correct Replacement Bearing and Grease Cap for a Dexter Axle
Updated 07/17/2014 | Published 07/16/2014 >
Question:
I am having trouble verifying the correct bearing and dust cap for the Dexter P-12 model SLR axle with hydraulic brakes. I believe that this is the correct set, but want confirmation on that as well as the correct dust caps. Thanks!

Any given axle could be fitted with more than one size of spindle so an axle reference alone is not enough to identify the appropriate bearings or grease cap. The easiest way to find the correct replacement bearing for your hub/spindle is to take the part reference numbers from the originals. If this is not possible you can take precise measurements (to the nearest thousandth of an inch) of the spindle surface using a digital caliper. The linked photo will show you the typical appearance and location of these part numbers; it also shows you where to measure the spindle in case parts numbers are not available and you need to search for a part by dimension.
Generally it is advisable to replace all hub components at one time to ensure a comparable life span. These will typically include the (inside) grease seal, the inner bearing and race, the outer bearing and race and the grease cap. Grease (dust) caps can be found also by taking a precise measurement of the hub inner diameter. The link provided will take you to our main page for all grease caps where you can select one based on your measurement. The filters in the left-hand margin will allow you to sort the results. I also linked our main page for bearings and seals.
If you are able to obtain part numbers you can search for these directly using our search box.
