Is Sealant Needed When Replacing Grease Seals and Dust Caps
Updated 11/30/2016 | Published 11/29/2016 >
Question:
Grease seal question - specifically Grease Seal - Double Lip - ID 1.719inch / OD 2.565. I watched the video and no silicone gasket seal was used when replacing the grease seal. And the outer edges do not appear to be covered with viton or similar. Is this ok? Some books recommend using silicone sealant on the grease seal but none on the dust cap? Doesnt make sense to me. Thanks.

Sealant is not required when installing a grease seal, like # RG06-050 you referenced. The cap will not need a sealant either. See the help article I've attached that explains the entire process of replacing bearings, races, and seals. I've also attached a video on repacking bearings and installing grease seals you may find helpful.
