That's a great question, Don.

The safety/stabilizer chains on the TorkLift Cannon # TLE1648 should be tightened just enough to remove slack and stabilize the extension, not overtightened. Their purpose is to reduce side-to-side and up-and-down movement in the extension.

A good rule of thumb is to install the extension, tighten the Cannon’s anti-rattle/set bolts first, then attach the stabilizer chains and hand-tighten the turnbuckles until the extension feels solid with minimal movement. The chains should be taut, but not as tight as a guitar string.

Once the trailer is connected, it’s a good idea to recheck everything since the load can settle slightly. Some minor movement is normal with any hitch extension, especially longer lengths.

What are you planning on towing with the Cannon?
