Will HappiJac Turnbuckles Work With TorkLift Tie-Downs?

Updated 08/04/2026 | Published 07/31/2026

Question:

Hello, Im new to the world of truck campers and could use some advice on tie downs. I Purchased the frame mounted front and rear torklift brackets for my 2020 Ram crew cab, which are a very nice kit. The camper came with happijac turnbuckle type tie downs, which i think are pretty worn out. I was thinking of purchasing the LC182898 tie downs, which I believe are the same. Is this a decent option? Eventually Ill probably get some fast guns, but for now just looking to make sure Im solid and safe. I appreciate any tips.

Hi Clint, welcome back

The HappiJac Original Turnbuckles for Camper Tie-Downs - Stainless Steel - Qty 4 # LC182898 are likely what you are looking for and will be a good in between option (they are actually pretty nice and should last a good long time). However, it should be noted that these are designed for use with the HappiJac style front tie-downs, which are much higher up than the TorkLift tie-downs (see how there are two shorter hooks in the included image).

People do get around this by using chains, which I am not a fan of. The better way to adapt these to the TorkLift tie-downs is to grab two of the Replacement Threaded Hook for HappiJac Rear Turnbuckle - 24" Long # LC149814 to go along with them. With these, the front ones will be as long as the rear ones and you will have no issues reaching everything and you won't need to use chains to fill the gap.

If/when you upgrade the turnbuckles, I recommend going with the TorkLift Locking FastGun Turnbuckles for Frame-Mounted Tie-Downs - Stainless Steel - Black - Qty 4 # TLS9529-2-LK. They are definitely pricey, but they are also super nice. They are easier to secure, are all the same length, and include locks, which is a big plus in my book.

What kind of camper did you get? And where are you planning on taking it for the maiden voyage?

Thank you for the guidance. We picked up a Bigfoot 2500 series 9.6. We took an overnight trip a few miles from home to familiarize ourselves with the camper systems and will be taking a longer trip next week. I think the turnbuckles I have no longer have functioning dampener springs, so I thought it would be best to start fresh. As always, I appreciate the guidance.

@ClintB I havent had any problems with them. And dont plan to upgrade o fast guns. I never take my camper off the truck. I doubt this helps you much. Because if your taking it off and on fast guns could be the way to go.

@ClintB Cool camper! How was the ride on the way back after picking it up? I saw you got air bags a while back and was wondering if you noticed them helping.

@Paul Leaving a camper on at all times would kind of negate the need for the FastGun turnbuckles. They do make putting them on and taking them off easier though. What kind of tie-downs do you have on your truck?
