Question:
Hi I bought a tekonsha brake controller and was thinking about upgrading to a proportional brake controller from tekonsha instead... My question is would the harness I have now work with a proportional from the same company?

Hey Rich! Yes, your existing Tekonsha wiring harness will be able to plug into a new Tekonsha brake controller. However, you may have difficulty finding one. Tekonsha is for sale following the bankruptcy of their parent company, and most of their parts are hard to find. We haven't had their brake controllers for a few months now.
If you want a really reliable alternative I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller # RED24FR. The Liberty is really easy to use and only the control knob will be visible in the cab so it won't take up space. The Redarc Tow-Pro Wiring Adapter # 331-TPH-017 will allow you to use that Tekonsha wiring harness so it is still plug and play.
What are you typically towing?

I bought the Redarc controller for a 2014 Jeep grand Cherokee. Easy plug in and setup. I never drilled the dash panel but used it on the console. Would certainly purchase again. (Our expedition came with a brake controller)

Robin is correct I installed this one in my Pathfinder and it was pretty easy and plug and play. It's also low profile.
