Offset Gooseneck Ball Recommendation for 2020 Ram 3500 with OEM Puck Kit Towing 2026 Grand Design

Updated 05/07/2026 | Published 05/02/2026

Question:

Was trying to find my answer in someone elses questions, but cant figure what applies or not as Im new to bed towing. We are awaiting delivery of our 26 Grand Design 324MBS with a Reese 20K Goosebox installed on it. As I have a 2020 Ram 3500 SRW Crew Cab with 64inch bed box and OEM puck system, do I need an offset ball like this or would a standard ball give me sufficient clearance?

Hey Caleb, I would strongly recommend going with an offset hitch ball like the Gen-Y part # GY83XR which will give you an additional 5 inches of offset and will do a great job giving you additional turning clearance.

Short bed trucks can do a decent job towing campers with gooseneck adapters but turning clearance can sometimes be tight so having more offset will be well worth the additional cost of an offset ball.

When I had my Ram truck I used the gen-y offset and I would highly recommend it to anyone with a short bed. You can make much better sharp turns without risking hitting the cab of your truck. I have an F450 dually now and gave mine to a close friend. If. You have a short bed try call me when you can don’t hesitate getting one you will thank Yourself over and over for doing it.

I purchased the offset ball for my 2024 RAM 2500 so the front of my 5th wheel had less of a chance of hitting my RAM's rear window.

We have a Brinkley Z 3100 fifth wheel we tow with a 2024 Ram 3500 SRW short bed truck with a Gen Y offset ball hitch. The trailer tows well and we have never had a problem making tight turns with the offset ball.

I have a 2020 ram DRW with the offset ball and Gen Y hitch on a 21 grand design momentum 351. I Love how it sets the hitch ball back enough to lower the tail gate without hitting the trailer. I have buddies who don’t have set backs and they have to either maneuver perfectly straight or the tail gate will hit the front of the trailer . Or they have to close the tail gate once they pass a certain point and then back up until they are over the ball. As far as turning I can almost do a 90 degree turn or close to it with the front of the momentum cap shape and this set back , it helps a lot. I would say the only thing I can feel is a little bit of slap where the bed and the mount ball meet since it’s just resting on the bed in theory. When you hit a bump you can kinda of hear it thud on the bed. As far as towing with the set back behind the axle I’m not too sure it would make a difference. The maneuverability and turning capabilities would offset that trade off I think.

Caleb. I purchased the 5 inch setback for my truck a 2017 Ram 2500 and was glad I did it gave me more room on the front of the bed for other items and i dont have to worry about the trailer making contact with the truck as well I did pull my trailer with the factory gooseneck puck but in some turns it was a little closer than I liked. Gen Y has redesigned the offset hitch Gen 2 and it uses the two rear pucks rather than the front two. Lot better hitch and smaller. Hope this helps.. Dom
