Will Curt Trailer Hitch C11412 Fit A 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI?

Updated 04/27/2026 | Published 04/19/2026

Question:

Looking at the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4inch Part Number: C11412 for mounting a my 2019 VW Golf GTI. I see conflicting information as to whether it is a fit for my car or not. In the included images Web Image 01.jpginch states it is a fit for my car, yet Web Image 02.jpginch states that the Curt Trailer Hitch Part Number: C11412 excludes GTI and R models GTI models. So the standing questions are: Will Curt unit be a fit for my car?? Are there any modifications needed for it to mount properly?? There was mention of having to trim 1 inch off the mount plate for earlier GTI models. Still required for a 2019 GTI?? Appreciate your time and effort given !! Regards, Jerry Brown Medina, OH

Hey Jerry, thanks for reaching out. Yes the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11412 will indeed fit your 2019 VW Gold GTI. They way we have it listed is a bit confusing but basically it will fit the GTI and non GTI models. It might just be more straightforward to say it fits all models of the 2109 Golf.

As far as installation, there are a few minor modifications required. You'll likely need to enlarge the access holes in the frame with a drill or file. You will also need to trim a section of the underbody panel. The exhaust will need to be lowered temporarily, but it will go right back into place once the hitch is installed. Overall, it shouldn't be terrible difficult if you're somewhat handy. Realistically I'd expect it to take about an hour or two.

What will you be using the hitch for? Bikes, a cargo tray, or a small trailer?

Had to enlarge frame rail holes under car. Fits GTI. Had to lower exhaust to install. No body panel removal or trimming necessary.

I was able to install hitch (and wiring) myself on 2020 VW GTI. I may have had to ream out 2 holes a little, and lower exhaust as shown in e-trailer video. Lifting car up some will be very useful, I had just a hydraulic jack which was not able to lift much, so install took more time, but still finished in less than a day.

@LeeC Hey Lee. Nice work installing that hitch by yourself! And yes, lifting the car up or even getting it up on a set of ramps definitely helps a lot. Thanks for the tip!
