Excellent fit. I installed it in 35 minutes, which 5 minutes of was grinding out the oblong hole to get the washer & bolt into the frame. Great product.

2015 Volkswagen Golf

Installed on my 2015 GTI at home, took about 45 minutes with the appropriate tools. I had to lift the rear end of the car to get under it and have room to install. The hitch installs above the exhaust, luckily with VW you only need to drop the exhaust hangers from the frame to get access. I had to use a stepped drill bit to knock off some of the rubberized coating on the frame and slightly enlarge the holes in the frame to slide the carriage bolt heads in. Once the hardware was fished into place the hitch installed easily. I've mainly used the hitch for a bike rack and it has worked great.

Jameson C helped me find the appropriate hitch for my car as the online filter only specified Golf and not GTI. I am pleased with the support from etrailer, this is my third hitch purchased from etrailer. It ships immediately and arrived maybe 3 days later, well packaged.

First off, I was please to see that the shipping came from back home. In 39 years of living in WashMo and Warren County, I didn't know Wentzville was home to eTrailer.
Shipping was as expected and arrived on the day promised. Installing the hitch Receiver was super easy, even on the ground with standard jack stands. I just started on the passenger side and used my body as the 'lift'/holder for the hitch to start the first nut/bolt, moved to the driver side for the second and third, and then back to the passenger side for the fourth. Major props to the addition of four Fishwires and whomever invented those. Where were those in my years as a maintenance mech for Zoltek, man could those have been helpful in so many situations.
The wiring harness was a bit more difficult as the trim removal was a bit different than the video and I had to find a random YT video to figure out how to remove the trim. It would have been better to have a forked terminal for the battery, or a smaller diameter round one. I did close in the ring after splitting it, to give a better and more secure contact.

by:

Excellent trailer and way too easy to self-install using the shipping box as a lift. It also helps that I'm attaching to an e-Golf so no exhaust get out of the way - just lift the rear on jack stands, set in the sleeves and bolts and use the box to raise the hitch close enough to get bolts hand tight on one side, then the other.

Had the hitch for a year now and its been great. Easy to install and as solidly constructed as the e-Golf. No rattles, moans, groans, or knocking. Hoping the next owner of the car will enjoy it as much as I did as the car was sold just a short while ago.

Just finished installing the hitch on our '15 VW GTI. Very pleased with the quality of the product. The instructions were excellent and the install took me 43 minutes total. Not bad, I am a slow handyman at best, but this was a very simple project. Only minor fiddling. The fish wire instructions were spot on and they worked perfectly. I left them on as I guided the hitch into place to prevent pushing the bolts back into the frame. A helping hand holding the hitch in place while I put the nuts on would have been nice, but I got by without it.

This works great. I'm by no means a mechanic, but I had access to a lift and a great set of tools. That being said, installation was easy and took 20 min with the excellent instructions. The receiver is inconspicuous when my bike rack isn't in it and works great. Customer service was extremely helpful and friendly.

Michael,It looks like you are using a 1UpUSA bike rack. Does that require the use of an extension for the receiver so the rack will clear bumper? It looks to me like an extension is not needed, just hoping someone with direct experience could confirm. Thanks, Kent

Firstly, the packaging was incredible. etrailer did an awesome job making sure that the hitch receiver was secure from damage or losing any of its bolts in the box. This alone warrants a 5 star review. For the hitch itself, it is well made and does the job well.

My only word of advice for installation specifically for a Mk7 VW Golf (I installed on a 2017 Golf) is to be aware of any possible undercoating that will narrow the mounting holes. I had to file some of the undercoating and a bit of the hole itself in order to just squeeze the bolt heads through. I had to install each bolt head first at an angle and then fish it through with the included wires. Other than that it took about 30 minutes to an hour to completely install the hitch.

Also, get a deep 22mm socket for the nuts. It'll save you a trip to the hardware store!

2017 Volkswagen Golf

I installed a hitch on my 2017 Volkswagen TSI this weekend. First I rode the rear up on some patio blocks to give me more room to work. Only hard part was fish wiring the bolts. The access hole was very, very tight, even after scraping away all the insulation. I had to file and file, bang a bit with a hammer and screw driver, file and file, tried using pliers of some sort, filed some more, and then finally the bolts went through. Needed a second person for about 5 minutes to help left the hitch onto the bolts. I bought a torque wrench (one of the cheaper ones), but it didn't seem to work. At first I thought I just wasn't tightening the bolts enough, because I wasn't getting any sort of indication from the wrench (it was supposed to make a clicking sound). But then I set the wrench to a really low torque setting and still didn't get any indication. I think I'll just rent a torque wrench next week and recheck my work. Any chance I over-tightened things?

Robert, I do not believe you over-tightened the bolts, but as you suspected, it sounds like you had a faulty torque wrench. You may rent a heavy-duty torque wrench from your local auto parts store.

2015 Volkswagen Golf

I have only good things to say about your trailer hitches and wiring harnesses. Installation of both was simple -albeit tedious- and both perform very well in my 2015 VW Golf TDI.

I mainly use it for airplane towing, but works well for trailer towing. I would highly recommend these products. Thank you for your help.

2015 Volkswagen Golf

Got a call the day after my order stating that my item was on back order and would be delivered ASAP. It happens although it would have been nice to know that it was out of stock upon the order page. But it got delivered safely along with the other attachements. I had it installed by my mechanic -not having torque tool - and it was done in less than an hour for $45! He said that he was grateful for the (your) video that I supplied him.
The part fits. seems sturdy enough for 2 lines with my Yakima Double-Down rack. The hitch is fairly low to the ground but I'll see how this affects my on-and-off driveways!
The leveling bars are helpful - not perfect in engineering - but helpful in leveling the bikes on the rack. I will also use straps to secure the Yakima to the car somehow.
Great job in communications by eTrailer and I highly recommend their sales and service.

This trailer hitch is great! It was easy to install- etrailer has great you tubes to help and has been a great addition. I took a cross country trip and used a tray off the hitch for camping gear that worked out great.

Just watch out for ground clearance if car is fully loaded.
Same great etrailer service as usual.

We recommend using a set of ramps or a commercial lift if available for installing a hitch. Especially for this vehicle since it is a low profile, using a set of ramps, (with the front wheels properly stabilized) or a lift will make the installation process much easier.

2015 Volkswagen GTI

Awesome! I was reluctant to order this trailer hitch
Being the fact that my GTI is a 2015. But after watching the
Video I placed the order. The packaging is great
Minus the Tape that they wrapped the assembly parts.
Honestly it took longer to get the tape and parts off the hitch
Than it took to install it. I installed it without jacking
The car up or lift. I had plenty of room to maneuver and
It's light enough to be a one man job. It took 20 min
Start to finish. Hitch is solid and you can barely see it.
I highly recommend this to any 2015 GTI owner.

by:

Serviceable hardware, immaculately packed and shipped. All the nuts and bolts were securely cling-wrapped to the hitch itself and nothing was missing or damaged. Installed on a 2021 Golf TSI with zero drama -- everything lined up perfectly and the fish wire worked like magic. I had an extra set of hands to thread the nuts while I held up the hitch and that did the trick; total time was 35 minutes. Coupled with a Kuat Sherpa, we're looking forward to road tripping with bikes tucked safely in our slipstream. Very pleased!

After a year I can confirm this product holds up very well in GA weather. I do wish it was foldable but aside from that it’s a great trailer.

by:

Great for a GTI. I use this with my rocky mounts bike rack and it’s a perfect fit. Subdued and unobtrusive, which is a great combination for this vehicle. 4 months of use and several thousand miles across the country have proven it to be a valuable asset.

by:

I like how easy and simple was to install. Only thing was confusing at first was the fishwire to route the bolts and plates to mount the receiver but wasn’t bad after I got it down. I also bought the custom harness to go with it. Used a curt euro hitch works perfect makes the trailer sit perfect. The car I’m using in the photo is a 2015 VW Golf TDI S.

by:
2015 Volkswagen GTI

super easy install with the right tools. had it finished in 15 mins with the help of a friend. better to have an extra set of hands, AND, you'll need to drive up on some boards to be able to slide the hitch into place since my 2015 GTI is close the ground. fast ship, excellent shape on arrival.

by:
2018 Volkswagen Golf

Very good quality, I wasn’t sure if it would fit my 2018 golf tsi because of the new rear bumper and exhaust but it bolted up nicely. I was able to install it alone by resting one end of the hitch on my knee while I bolted up the other end. 10/10 would recommend!

by:
2015 Volkswagen Golf

This is the third hitch I've installed this year, and by far the easiest. I like that the VW Golf has a bolt to drop the exhaust, rather than fighting the rubber mounts off of the hooks. Holes line up very easily. If it weren't for me having to stop and find a 3/4" socket for the (4) bolts, it would have been a 15 minute job! Very nice hardware as well. This is my seventh hitch from etrailer.com, and I could not be happier!

by:

Took 3 days to get here with free shipping! Installation was just like the video showed, although I did it on my back solo. Hardest part was torquing the nuts to 110 ft/lbs. Great fit and finish. I did double check that hitch #C11412 would fit a 2015 Golf TDI, as some other sellers gave me some doubt.
