Determining Ground Clearance of Curt Hitch Installed on 2025 VW Tiguan

Updated 04/21/2026 | Published 04/09/2026

Question:

How much clearance is between the bottom of the receiver tube and the ground when this is installed? Just want to make sure I dont need to worry about it striking the ground on a bumpy road, curb, driveway, etc 2025 Tiguan SE 4Motion

Hey Matthew, while I don't have that exact figure I can tell you that the hitch opening of the Curt hitch # C99RJ is going to fit right up under the rear bumper of your 2025 Tiguan so you'd need to measure the distance from the rear bumper down to ground and subtract right at 3 inches.

Matthew, I have had my hitch installed for a month with no issues with ground clearance. It does sit right on the bottom of the bumper and looks great installed. I have gone on a few off-road adventures with my bike rack and no issues. FYI - when fishing the wires through the frame for the bolts, I found it easier to use an electrical wire to fish backwards for the holes closest to the back of the vehicle. I then was able to use electrical tape to connect to the supplied fish wires and pull back through the hole. Much easier than trying to fish directly as the angle is tricky. Hope this helps, Brian B.

It fits tight to the bumper cover. Only loose 2” clearance. Not hard to install.

Hi Matthew, I measured 10-1/2" between the bottom of the receiver and the ground. The other issue is that VW changed the dimensions of the 2025 Tiguan, and this change wasn't reflected in the Curt hitch -- there was an extra 1/2" between the hitch vertical tabs and the VW body supports, so you may need to fashion a shim (unless they've corrected this by now).
