If you plan to carry bikes on the road, on rough terrain, or on the back of an RV, most racks aren't rated for all three. The HoldUp is, so you can take your bikes wherever you go with one rack instead of switching racks between trips.
Weekend rides or quick stops across town come down to what the rack can carry. The HoldUp supports two bikes up to 60 lbs each for road use. That drops to 40 lbs per bike for off-road and RV use, where added movement from the road changes how weight is handled. This range covers standard bikes and many e-bikes on the road, but limits heavier setups when mounted to an RV. This matters most if you're carrying heavier e-bikes or planning RV trips, where exceeding those limits can affect stability and safety.
Frame shapes vary, and accessories like fenders or battery packs can get in the way. The StrongArm hook presses down on the front tire while the rear wheel strap holds the back in place. Contact stays at the wheels, so frame shape and add-ons do not affect how the bike mounts. There's no frame contact, which is especially important for carbon frames, custom paint, or bikes with mounted accessories.
Two bikes side-by-side often puts handlebars and pedals into each other during loading and transport. The trays shift side to side, letting you offset each bike's position. This spacing reduces overlap and keeps components from pressing into each other while driving. This helps avoid the trial-and-error of reloading bikes multiple times just to keep them from bumping into each other.
Accessing the rear of your vehicle often gets blocked once bikes are loaded. The 3-position tilt lowers the rack away from the vehicle, even with bikes in place, so you can open a hatch or trunk. When unloaded, the rack folds up to reduce how far it extends from the vehicle. So you don't have to unload your bikes just to reach tools, groceries, or other gear in the back.
Different bikes bring different wheel sizes, tire widths, and wheelbase lengths. The HoldUp fits 20" to 29"/700c wheels, tires up to 4-13/16" wide, and wheelbases from 34" to 50". This range covers most adult bikes, including many mountain and gravel setups.

Hi everyone. I'm Evangeline right here at etrailer. Since every bike rack fits every car differently, today we're focusing in on how the Yakima HoldUp2 Bike Carrier fits on a 2024 Kia Carnival. The HoldUp is a legacy brand or model from Yakima, but this is gonna be their new and improved version where you still have that more compact, easy to use design, but now you have a higher weight capacity and this fits more bikes. But more importantly, for the Kia Carnival, this has a really easy two bike add-on feature to it. So that makes it so much more helpful if you're loading up your Carnival with your friends, your family, and you wanna carry all the bikes.
So we have just the two bike version here today, and a lot of the features you're gonna have the same. The main one though is that the tilt away function on a the HoldUp is not that deep. So if you are planning on getting into your cargo area, you pull that pin to one side, you pull this other pin, and then you tilt everything away. And this is about it for your tilt away angle, especially when you have that automatic door open function on the Carnival. I would be mindful of making sure to either catch the door or just go around the other side of your vehicle.
Bringing this back up into place, there is a latch on the left that catches, but you're still gonna have to put the pin in. Now I am lifting the bike rack in order to get to that angle, so you'll notice up top how close that handle gets, especially when I'm lifting up on the rack. So something to be mindful of is I do have the larger bike here in place, so I do have those longer than usual handlebars compared to my own bike. End to end, we have it at, well, closer to 30 inches, that be 29 and 3/4 inches long. So if you have short handle bars, no big deal.
If this is the handlebar you have, I recommend putting a rag or some foam just to protect your window. All right, let's talk about how this bike is loaded up here. We have two touch points. The first one being our front wheel mount, the second being our rear wheel cradle. So this is adjustable.
It has a different angle depending on your wheel base. And then the tray itself is adjustable too. If you find your two bikes kind of collide with each other, you just slide them on over, further away from each other. So that rear wheel strap release, I then just grab this bike, pass this lever, lift up, push out, and now I can grab the bike and go. And that's really nice, especially this larger bike, seeing how it fits onto the HoldUp, since I know the older version didn't have the same amount of weight capacity. This one which we have here, is 60 pounds. So even if you have your slightly heavier electric bikes, you're still gonna have a good fit here. Now, if you are not carrying your bikes, I say just go ahead, put those straps away, fold down that hook, make sure it latches so it doesn't rise back up. And then this one goes in too. Nice. Well, that looks really good. It really doesn't take up that much space behind our car, but how much space exactly does it take up Well, if I was to measure from the bumper to the end of the bike rack, I have it at 29 and 1/2 inches. So pretty compact there. Another measurement I like to look at too, especially for the Carnival and its hitch being on the lower side is ground clearance. So the end of the rack to the ground is about 15 and 1/2 inches. Compare that to where the bottom part of our shank is and it's nine and 1/2 inches. So you can see that seven inch rise, making it better for inclines like driveways or potholes. Now this does fold up to be even more compact and neat. So remember those pins we pulled earlier To tilt this rack away, I'm gonna pull them again, but this time, I'm gonna lift up on the rack and now it's in our folded up position. So as long as you have those wheel hoops secured, you're gonna have plenty clearance between your bike rack and your car and compared to that length earlier, now from the bumper to the end of the bike rack, it's only 10 inches. Big difference compared to earlier, a lot more compact. Make sure before you drive away, you put that pin right back in. I'm just gonna tuck this up here so we can talk about how this looks like behind the car. So something a lot people worry about is their view, if they cover things, but how small this folds up, full visibility out of your rear view window. Your lights are visible, your license plate is visible and so is your backup camera. So if you're driving around with this bike rack on your car, it's good to know you can still see the people behind you. If you are using the two bike add-on, that will cover a bit of the back of your vehicle, but not so much where I would be concerned since your lights are still visible. So if you are looking for a bike rack for your car that has a higher weight capacity, can carry a variety of bikes, has an easy to use wheel mount and can easily be added on to become a four bike carrier, the Yakima HoldUp is a great option. This is an aluminum bike rack so it's not as heavy as some of the other four bike racks. So great for storing in your garage, then loading up onto your Carnival when you're ready for a ride. You just saw the Yakima HoldUp on a 2024 Kia Carnival.

This has a limited lifetime warranty but rust is not covered under warranty. With most aftermarket products like this one, it will need taken off when not in use, lubricated often, and filed and repainted once you noticed rust forming. Here are some tips in this attached article:

One year later and the rack frame continues to rust and deteriorate. It has been removed during the winter and when not in use and lubricated per etrailers previous comment but this did not slow down the rust.

From looking at your photos, you installed the top wheel tray assembly opposite of the instructions. The wheel strap is to your right, and pivot arm is to your left when it comes to the bottom wheel tray assembly. The sticker belongs on the bottom wheel tray when it is in the upright position as shown in our installed photos above. Also, stabilizing straps are recommended with this rack. You can purchase something like item # 18050.

Entirely disagree with the light enough comment- I purchased the 2 2 version and it has to weigh the most awkward 125 lbs Ive ever carried. Pay the extra $$ and get the KUAT aluminum version. Makes it even more of a PITA when trying to lift it up to vertical. Takes two people and cannot expect my wife and 7 yr old to manhandle it. Enginerds should have used a coil spring to assist with the lift. Also- after owning for 8 months, theres significant pooled corrosion i.e. orangered liquid oozes from every nook/cranny after a rain. They clearly did not protect the interior and expect that very soon the powdercoating will give way to flaking leafs of corroded metal. A huge shame for something that set me back so much $$$.KUAT- lighter and wont rust!

I spent nearly $800 for the 2 up with plus 2. Light enough, maybe if you only use the 2 bike version, it weighs over 50 lbs. I have the older grey 2 up along with the 2 plus making it hold 4 bikes. Combined they weigh about 100 lbs. No way one person can put the receiver in the hole. Very difficult for one person to raise up the unit from horizontal also. Two different size wrenches needed to take on and off bike as I have to remove the plus 2 first, 34 wrench then a 15/16 is needed on hitch. The plus 2 also does not come with a lock to secure it to the 2 up or a cable to lock the bikes to the rack. You will need to purchase them separately, another $50. I have also had two of the arms fail in a little over a year now, they have a lifetime warrantee but that gets old replacing them.Rack does hold bikes very good, but I am not happy overall with my purchase. Other models out there for this kind of money take a look.
