Question:
My 17 year old “Atwood water heater GE16 EXT” is leaking. Is there a direct replacement that fit the same dimensions and capacity? Steve

Hey Steve! Your Atwood GE16EXT water heater is quite large and there is nothing right now that will be a direct replacement in terms of dimensions and capacity. I recommend switching to the Furrion RV Tankless Water Heater # FR68SR (white) or # FR42TD (black). Since this is tankless the hot water is virtually endless which is probably similar to what you're used to with the large tank you have now.
The Furrion has an 18" x 18" door which is designed to match the old Atwood. The required cutout is 12-3/4" wide x 12-5/8" tall x 23-1/2" deep. This will fit the width and height of your existing cutout but you will need a little under 3" of additional depth so you will need to measure to ensure fitment.
Any big trips coming up with your motorhome once you replace the water heater?

The best thing I ever purchased . Hot water almost immediately. Easy to install and winterize. Wish l had done this sooner.l did have to build a smaller box to fit it in, but cover that l received worked great.

Has been working flawlessly. I just set the temp to my 100 degrees and leave the cold off. I will never switch back. Earl

I had a similar situation with our Fleetwood. First I built a rough-in frame from 2x4's to keep the tankless in the center of the opening and in way that I could secure it to the floor and keep it centered. Then I used a pieces of 2" by 1" aluminum to build our a new opening frame that water heater is flush to before adding the external door panel. It all is very secure, no slips, not issues, multiple trips to South Padre. When creating the rough frame add additional support for the aluminum opening framing to connect to, this reduces the opening and keeps the installation of water simple and clean.
