How to Connect 7-Way on 2022 Ford Explorer With Tekonsha Voyager iD

Updated 02/02/2026 | Published 01/27/2026

Question:

I bought the Tekonsha Voyager iD w/ Custom Harness - Dash Knob Part Number: TK39DR, I have a 2022 Ford Explorer Limited Hybrid, it did not come with a factory tow package, it does have an aftermarket hitch that was installed with a 4 pin by previous owner. I was able to plug the controller into the gray plug under the dash, would you have any videos or pics that show the correct location of where the blue wire comes out in the back near the bumper area, I can add the extra wire, but would like to use the factory wire if possible. Thanks, Andy

Hi Andy; if you have the factory brake controller port on your 2022 Ford Explorer I expect it to have factory wiring at the rear. Have you checked to see what your 4-way is connected to? Do you have a connector back there that looks like it would fit the connector pictured below?

If the 4-way isn't plugged into a round connector like this I would look to see if it is hanging/connected somewhere at the rear behind the bumper with a dummy plug in it. If you have this connector you can use the # C36GJ to add the 7-way which will run up to the brake controller port you plugged your # TK39DR into. If it doesn't have the tow package you might have to take it by the dealer to have those circuits activated.

Robin, Thank you for the reply, since it is a hybrid I didn't want to start digging randomly, all 4 wires of the 4-way go in to what appears to be the left turn signal housing, it goes into a rubber plug/grommet, my guess is they didn't look for anywhere else and just went straight to the turn signal. I forgot to mention it had the 7-pin it is just wired from the 4-way. I'll remove some cover panels this weekend and look for a plug that, hopefully will look like the connector to one you showed in the bumper area. So it may have the wires but they may have to be activated? I would have thought the wire would just go to the back with no circuits in there, but I am used to old VW's. if the wiring it all there (and activated) I could just run a blue wire from the controller to the 7-pin to test, if that fails then I should be able to run all 4 wires directly from the controller to to a test light or 3 to see if I can get the controller to come on, right? since there are 4 wires plugged into the controller, I should be able to test for pos (blk), neg (wht) and can add a switch to simulate the brake and add a light to the blue for the power draw. Thanks again, Andy I will post a pic of the dash, I didn't like the idea of using the fuse door, so just a bit to the right there was enough room, took some educated guessing, tight fit but no conflicts, if I have to remove the panel I'll take pic of that too.

@AndrewD if the brake controller port is working properly you will have power to the brake controller right now. It should turn on, and you can use the manual override to verify it is sending power back. With that connector I would expect a connector at the back, not loose wires, especially on a 2022. Sometimes they add all of the factory wiring/connectors to every model, but don't add the fuses or relays required for everything to function. Sometimes it is computer related, they like to keep these things complicated.

@RobinH I just took the covers off, who ever installed it they uses an inline plug harness the goes in the left tail light wiring and has a green wire going to the right side, there is a battery in the back drivers side that is where they put the power & fuse, it is behind some inside panels to get to the fuse. I did not remove the bumper skin could not see where the clips/connectors are, but could not see any extra plug or wires in where I could see and feel. I have a 7-pin tester, so to test, I added to the blue wire from the brake controller to the ground on a test light (pos to batt) and the blue wire in the 7-pin, I connected pwr to the black on the 7-pin, white is already grounded, it lit up the TB light on the tester & the controller red light started blinking, if I press the button it turns green for a moment & my brakes come on, so it is partially functioning, I'm guessing the gray plug up front has the wires terminated somewhere so the controller is not grounded or as you said the relays or fuses might not be there. My next step it to use the BC plug that has no plug on the other end and connect those four wires to what they should be and see if makes th4e button turn green. it says blinking red means: Shorted brake magnets (its a tester, no magnets) Shorted trailer wiring open ground to vehicle battery, not sure what this means, the 7-pin has a wire (white) grounded to the chassis, I am using no actual ground for the test light, it has the blue as ground and the pwr is straight to the battery, could this be the open ground? if it sounds like the BC is wired correctly, then I can run a new blue wire form the front to the back and connect the pwr & ground from the rear battery

@AndrewD so that is an aftermarket wiring harness and it runs to the battery in the rear since that is the 12V power source for the hybrid. Do you actually have a 7-way on the vehicle without 12V power and the brake output wire connected? It is running to this 4-way you described connected the the tail lights? Could the the ground, I wouldn't worry too much about it until you get everything hooked up properly. If the brake controller is connected to the cold side of the stop light switch, 12V power, and grounded, then you can in fact run # 10-1-1 back to the 7-way directly from the brake controller.
