Recommended Flat Towing Parts for a 2022 Ford Escape Hybrid

Updated 01/23/2026 | Published 01/11/2026

Question:

Has anyone come up with a plug and play setup for the wiring? I would prefer to keep the vehicle wiring intact vs letting a trailer shop chop it all up. Also what about a installed brake controller that doesn’t require a certain brake controller like the stealth system

Hey Zasha. There are no plug in wiring harnesses to flat tow your 2022 Ford Escape Hybrid. This is common amongst flat towed vehicles anymore. The wiring systems are pretty complicated and most vehicles require a charge line, which can be connected through the same 6-pin used for the lights. We've also got quite a few braking systems that don't require modifications to your motorhome.

Here are the parts you'll need to flat tow a 2022 Ford Escape Hybrid:

Tow Bar and Safety Chains - etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar for Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plates item # e74ZR

Baseplate Kit - Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms item # RM39FR

Wiring Harness - Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles - item # RM-15267 or item # RM38FR if you have LED tail lights.

Supplemental Braking System - Curt RVi Series Shadow 2 Flat Tow Brake System item # RVI94FR. This permanently installed system includes the required charge line you'll need to keep your Escape's battery from dying on your trips. It is compatible with electric, hydraulic, and diesel motorhome air braking systems. The convenient dash monitor gives you instant access to brake settings and voltage readings on your battery. This is the only part that is required to be inside your motorhome. It plugs into a cigarette or USB port and sticks to your dash. All of the brake settings and the voltage reading is available through this monitor.

Brake Light Relay - Roadmaster Brake-Lite Relay Kit for Towed Vehicles item # RM-88400

High Low Adapter - The tow bar needs to be within 3" of level. If you measure the height of the inside top of the hitch receiver tube on your RV, and the height difference is more than 3 inches above/below the base plate tab height, you'll need a high/low adapter. I have linked a FAQ article that explains all this in more detail along with our selection of adapters.

What kind of motorhome do you have?

We had a body shop that we'd worked with before do the base plate install and the wiring. The body shop has all the tools and knowhow for all the little plastic fasteners, and is capable of putting it all back in mint condition, as that is what they do on a repair. They were also pretty fast, I think they did it in about 4 hours shop time, and didn't even screw up the adaptive cruise sonar. I've had less than great results at a trailer shop before, so recommend the body shop highly.

We have a Ford Escape Hybrid and the car repair did a great job with making the wiring changes. We added the system to our car a couple years ago and it has worked great. Easy to hook up and disconnect.

I bought a 2020 Ford Escape hybrid for the sole purpose of being able to flat tow it. I contacted ETrailer and they set me up with the exact parts needed for the whole thing. I had mine installed by a RV repair shop that I have been dealing with for quite a few years now. They said it was a little difficult due to the battery being at the back. But they did a fantastic job and you can't even tell it is on there. Nothing damaged all wiring intact. I don't recommend a self install unless you are experienced with the wiring of the vehicle. A good RV shop should be able to do the work for you. All the instructions and parts were an exact fit and the shop owner that installed ours said the instructions were well written. Hope this helps.
