Is There a Way to Put More than Just a Maintenance Charge on Trailer's Lithium Battery

Updated 01/11/2026 | Published 01/08/2026

Question:

We have a Intech Sol Horizon travel tailer. Installed a Lithium battery last year. When traveling the battery gets a trickle charge but wondering if a way to have it charge better from tow vehicle when traveling and not harming the battery or our Nissen Pathfinder. Thanks. Mike

Hey Michael, you would need a DC to DC charger that has a lithium profile like the Dometic PerfectPower charger part # GP95QR. Lithium batteries need a very specific voltage to get charged so this will make sure the voltage is correct and it has ability to put up to a 10 amp charge on the battery so it will do much more than just a maintenance charge. We have versions of this that have a lot higher amp ratings if you wanted to charge it quicker but they require heavier gauge wire ran from the charging system of the vehicle and also cost a bit more. What is the amp rating of your battery?

Thanks for your reply and conversation. The battery is a FIUNIE 12v 100Ah Lithium Iron Phosphate. Says it has a 12.8 operating voltage, a 14.4 charging voltage, recommended charge current of 20A. This looks like it would work for what I am looking for. Do you have any videos showing how to install? Can you somehow tie into your 7 way plug at back of the car? If you have to go to the main car battery would the 7 way plug still work for everything else? We have traveled on a number of trips in the last year with the battery and no issues with the car battery or alternator. Have we just been lucky? Thanks. Mike Battoclette

@MichaelB We don't have any install videos at this time for this charger but it's pretty straight forward. You can route it through the charge circuit of your 7-way as well since it's not a super high amperage. Since you probably don't want this on all the time for every trailer connection you might install it on the trailer side of the 7-way wiring on the 12 volt output circuit. Be sure this circuit has at least 10 gauge wire on both the trailer and vehicle side. What is going on right now is basically only going to ever let the battery get to 85 percent charged and that would be under the most ideal circumstances.

@JamesonC- Thanks. Still a little confused as I have talked to the trailer manufacturer and they say no need for the dc to dc charger and just plugged into with the 7 way on the car there will be no harm to trailer components, battery or the car alternator. We have set up this way for the last year traveling and no issues other than after 300-400 mile trip the battery is at like 20-30% charge but charges right back up when hooked to shore power. Trailer manufacturer says all normal as the refrigerator in our unit takes lots of battery power. I sent a note to the lithium battery manufacturer to ask same questions and no response yet. Talked to a trailer service company locally and they say should not be any issues. I am just trying to determine a simple way, if there is one, to get a better charge on the lithium battery in the camper when we travel 300-400 miles. Thanks.

@MichaelB It might not cause much harm but it won't be the correct voltage to charge the battery as Lithium batteries require a very specific voltage to charge.
