Hey Ron, great question!
The new PowerMax stand-alone converters like the 45A # PM34VR, 55A # PM94VR, 60A # PM44VR, and 100A # PM84VR give you three selectable charging modes so you’re not locked into one charging behavior.
3-stage mode factory default: Automatically cycles through boost 14.4V, normal 13.6V, and storage 13.2V to charge and maintain the battery(s).
2-stage mode: Uses boost and float only, which some users prefer for simpler charging behavior.
Fixed voltage mode: Lets you manually set and hold a constant voltage between 13–16V, which can be useful for generator charging or specialty battery needs if you want it charged faster or slower.
This flexibility is one of the big advantages over many older OEM converters. I'd recommend just leaving it in the standard 3-stage mode and let the smart charge do its thing. What type of batteries are you charging?
