Tallest Tire Available For The 13" Dexstar Steel Mini Mod Trailer Wheel AM20242

Updated 12/24/2025 | Published 12/23/2025

Question:

What’s the tallest tire that will fit on this wheel? Additionally, can I order that tire, and this wheel already mounted? I would need a pair. Thanks!

Hi James!

The largest aspect ratio (tallest) tire you can put on the Dexstar Steel Mini Mod Trailer Wheel - 13" x 4-1/2" Rim - 4 on 4 - Black # AM20242 will have an aspect ratio of 80. So the largest tire we have for this wheel is the Kenda Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM1ST79 for a bias tire, or the Kenda Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # KE68KV for a radial. Keep in mind the wheel does not include a valve stem, so you will also want to grab the Americana Rubber Snap-In Valve Stem - 1-1/4" Long - Up to 100 psi # AM93FV. It's a little overrated for this kind of set up, but it doesn't hurt to over do it with these.

As to mounting them, we do not have the ability to that at the moment, unfortunately. Maybe we will some day, but really any tire shop can get this done for you. I do typically recommend going to a trailer shop though. Trailer tires are a bit different than automotive rated tires and a trailer place will likely give you a better price.

What are you wanting to install these on?

I’m building a small custom tool trailer from an old 40x48 northern tool trailer. However my truck is tall and I also want to bring the rotations down as much as possible to extend wheel bearing life. Additionally I’m building a work surface on the trailer so I want it to be on as tall a tire as possible so it site up high. Follow up question. Are there taller tire and wheel combinations for a 12” wheel in the same lug pattern, 4on4? I am wondering about potentially using car tires on a trailer wheel as well. The trailer won’t be heavy enough to necessitate a trailer specific tire. Thanks again. Merry Christmas.

@JamesB Sounds like it's going to be an interesting trailer when it's finished! Let me know how it turns out! As to your follow up question, I am not aware of a 12" option that will be taller. The Taskmaster 5.30R12 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 12" Vesper White Spoke Wheel - 4 on 4 - LR C # TA79QR (which is the tallest 12" option we have) will have an overall diameter of 21.57" (the Loadstar # AM1ST79 has a diameter of 24.4" and the Karrier # KE68KV has a diameter of 24.6"). It also has less capacity (1,050 lbs at 80 psi whereas the Loadstar has 1,710 lbs at 65 psi and the Karrier has 1,709 lbs at 65 psi). It does have the same speed rating though. Have you though about changing out to a different bolt pattern? There are definitely taller option available with the 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern. I tend to steer people away from using vehicle tires on trailers as they are designed pretty differently to trailer tires.

@LazerS I didnt think about that. Do you have a 5x4.5 hub that will fit a 1” straight spindle? Would need one with races pre installed at minimum of not fully pre-packed.

@James We do indeed! The etrailer Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # AKIHUB-545-2-LF-1K will work with a 1" straight axle (# L44643 inner and outer bearings which are included, as are the lug nuts, seal, grease cap, and pre-installed races) and can be used with up to a 15" wheel. From there, something like the Kenda Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Tire with 15" White Spoke Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2" - Load Range D # AM32545 will have a diameter of 28.4" and I think you will be much happier with its size. We do have other styles and colors if you are interested as well. One thing I haven't mentioned, you do want to make sure you have roughly 3" between the top of the tire and the fender and roughly 1.5" between the sidewall of the tire and the frame/fender as well. Probably should have mentioned that earlier.
