Looking To Replace The Braking System On My 1987 Flatbed Trailer

Updated 12/12/2025 | Published 12/11/2025

Question:

Hi. For my 1987 double axle flatbed trailer, I need to replace destroyed old HADCO braking system. Drums are 12 HADCO LA 3107 with 5x5.5 lug pattern, and brakes are one-piece welded on to the 3 axles with a junky looking, triangular frame. This was probably a 5 to 7.5k lbs setup. Is it correct that 12, 5x5.5 drums are no longer available? I want to keep the wheels and tires, so Im willing to go down if necessary to 10 drums and 3,500lb capacity. If this is the only way to go, are these the right parts needed? ... 4 DM52415 demco weld-on, 4 bolt backers with 3 pilot hole 4 AKHD-555-35EZK Hub and drum assemblies 2 AKEBRK-35-SA left and right brake kits Thanks for looking in to this conversion for me! Im at 707.4896.3954 if thats easier.

Hey Greg,

I do not see any 12" 5 on 5-1/2 that we carry so I imagine they are either extinct or limited selection. The parts you mentioned, the backing plate # DM52415 , hub and drums # AKHD-555-35EZK, and brakes AKEBRK-35-SA in those quantities look like just what you need in order to keep the wheels and tires.

The drums are pre greased ready to slide on and the brake assemblies will be a simple bolt on once the backing plate is welded. I hope everything is okay after the broken system but this will get you back on the road. What are you using that flatbed to haul around?

Nick, my trailer co-owner took a close look at the tires, and they are dry-rotted. And he wants to keep the 10k GVWR, so we'll go with new wheels in order to get 12" brakes. So one more check here, will these products work together on my 3" tube axles? (4) 44-44-1 5 bolt brake mounting flange, (2) AKEBRK-7-SA 12" brake kits, and (4) AKHD-655-6-EZ-K 12" drum & hub We'll take a look at your tire & wheel packages too. thx again

@GregC All of those parts look good for your setup if you are wanting to keep the 10k GVWR. That'll get you all set and back on the road.
