Can GE Low Profile AC Unit With Heat Pump Be Installed DIY?

Updated 12/29/2025 | Published 12/02/2025

Question:

Currently have forest river pallomino solaire with GE ac units. I am looking to trade one out for the GE low profile ac with heat pump. Was wondering if this was something one with fair amount of skills could accomplish, as in is it take one out, same wiring and all, plug new one in..

Hello Robbie, thanks for reaching out. That could be a plug and play swap, but only if your current thermostat and control box are already compatible with a heat pump model. If so, all you will need to do is swap out the rooftop unit. If not, you will need a new thermostat and control box so some additional wiring will be required. Other than that, and the fact that these rooftop units are heavy and awkward to lift, it’s a pretty manageable afternoon project for someone with decent skills. If you can share your current AC’s model number, I can tell you exactly what will or won’t plug right in.

It sounds like your current GE unit does not have a heat pump. If so, you will need the following:

- GE Appliances Low-Profile RV AC w/ Heat Pump - Ducted - 15,000 Btu - Black - Complete System # GE26RR

This comes with the rooftop unit, distribution box, controller and wall thermostat. This is for a ducted system.

Let me know if you have any questions, or if there is anything else I can do to help!

Hey Robbie, how did the swap to the GE low-profile AC with heat pump go on your Solaire? Were the thermostat and control box already compatible, or did you end up replacing them too? Your update could make it easier for others planning the same upgrade.
