Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 10/02/2025

Question:

Im purchasing a 1997 Coleman Fleetwood sea pine pop-up camper. Its been garage stored and is in mint condition. It does not have a furnace. Can I add on a rooftop ac/heater unit easily? Thanks

Hey Brian, congrats on the new-to-you camper!

Adding an AC with a heat pump will be easy enough, but you will need to make sure the roof is strong enough to hold the weight of the AC and you'll have to route some wiring. If you haven't done anything like this before then you'll either want to have a shop do it for you or have someone with experience help you plan it all and get it installed. I watched a few videos others has posted online about that year/make/model camper and it looks like others have installed an AC so it's definitely doable.

I recommend using the GE Appliances Low-Profile RV AC w/ Heat Pump which comes in Black # GE56RR as well as White # GE96RR. This is a sleek setup that doesn't rely on ductwork and it comes with a thermostat so you don't have to reach towards the ceiling unit just to change settings. These are also rated for 13,500 Btu which is honestly a bit much for a pop-up, but it will be nice to have something a little overpowered when you get into the summer and winter months when temps are a bit more exaggerated since your camper won't have the best insulation.

Where do you plan on going for your first trip?

Hey Brian, how did things go with adding the GE Low-Profile AC and heat pump to your Sea Pine camper? I'm curious if the roof handled the weight and wiring as expected. Your experience could help others thinking about the same upgrade.
